I thought I'd post this here too!
I do it because I enjoy getting people together in a community.
I'm an awful role-player, I don't type more than three sentences, all of my characters have heterochromia, and I'm still a sucker for script-style role-playing. I'm more for the story, anyway.
The feeling of creating something that brought together some of the closest friends you'll meet is the biggest reward for me, and is the reason I continue to make roleplaying forums. Plus, it's interesting to see all of the different writing styles come together!
Why do you admin? What do you get out of it, and why do you enjoy it?

Well, I've never yet administrated or staffed at a site I've considered 'mine.' I'm used to being one of the people drawn in. Many of my friends would ask me to become staff, and I'd take on the job as their friend to make it less work for them, so they can have some help to lean on. (Staff work can be some serious legwork.) I don't necessarily enjoy the duties and responsibility of being a staff member, but I like the feeling that I can give a little more of my heart into a site.
I plan on creating and admining my own site one day, something to bring all my friends together in one place with an old original idea I had with an even older friend. It's difficult to find a place where I could RP with all of them because they all have different tastes and fandom interests.

I have not just an idea in mind, but ideas. I want it to happen and I don't trust anyone else to do a better job at it than me.
That's pretty much why, lol. The last time I first and last time I administrated a site was years ago, which I inherited when the owner left. I haven't done so in years and only doing it again recently. I don't try to imagine what kind of community my site would end up having. Instead, I take in pleasure on what it molds to and I just join in, rather than trying to shape it. As I haven't really had that much experience in handling sites, I'm speaking from limited but current experience. There's always that thrill and surprise when unexpected members (people who you've never met or heard before) are enthusiastic about the site more than you and you get motivated along.
And it also comes from the staff. I'm very pleased and proud of my Water Margin staff right now. It's an RP that's not open yet but the progression is better than I thought. At this point, I'm not planning to run the site for my own sake but for the entire team.

tl;dr my friends and community relies on me and my team to supply them good things, and that's what we do. working with rain, tsu doll, phim, venice, and others on occasion to make good roleplay sites to meet new people and make new friends is the only thing i find motivating in being an admin. besides, i've been doing it since 2006. the only thing i really know how to do at this point.

With me, I think I enjoy admining more because people really don't understand things that I try to explain. Like, ninety percent of ideas that I give, people don't understand what I'm talking about and they don't really take it into account. And when I try to explain it better, they just still don't understand what I'm talking about.
Plus when I'm a member, I feel a bit useless and I really enjoy helping out on sites with things that they need.
Also when I'm an admin, I'm less likely to have my opinions and ideas get yelled at... x-x

[style= border-left: 3px solid#217aff; padding: 10px] Hmmm... I couldn't tell you why I like to admin/mod for forums. I've done each three times now and had a great time both ways and the only reason I had to stop were once life issues, twice the admins leaving without a word (mods don't make the site go round we just help it go smoothly y'know), once due to the site simply dying due to lack of effort on the staff team (lolthxforthehelp) and once to to very sudden and complete loss of muse. The last was more of a fight that escalated and I just didn't want to fight anymore. xD
Nevertheless! Meeting people that you know as an Admin/Mod that you can help and be there for is a pretty cool feeling. I love it when you throw an event and everyone gets excited, and how when you finish grading an app everyone is waiting for plotwise they all gather in the cbox and glomp you like bazillion times. >w<
What can I say, I also kinda like the authority. Most of the time I spend using a regular colored name (sometimes a completely different name) that some of the older members will recognize and know and others might not, as to not intimidate or hold power over other members. But it's definitely nice to know that you can have something backing you when you tell someone to stop doing something and they're all "I don't care I'll do what I want what are you gonna' do about it?"

WHY DO I ADMINISTRATE? Hmm. I think it's because I like playing an active role in a site's development. I've always enjoyed working on plots or events for people to enjoy. While my weak spots has to be in moderating and rules. I'm the happy admin talking away in a cbox and scribbling down ideas. I've never been very 'by the book'. Even on sites that I've built, I'm never one to take things seriously. That might be because it's my words I'm enforcing. But, overall, I like being an admin who enforces a 'fun' atmosphere for other members. :3 [/size]

Hm, being an administrator and running my own things have taught me that it's more than just running the place.
The reason why I make and admin a site is pretty much like Tanz said. I have ideas in my head and I know no one can do it better, but myself. When I create/admin a site, I try to go for something of the abnormal, creating something that no one have seen before or at least something with a plot that's original enough to be taken notice of/catch the member's attention.
I have a history of being 'too nice' when I was head admin of a site of mine years ago, but I learned from that and hopefully I grew from it. I guess you can also say I like the thought of being a 'professional business person' running something not because it's 'work' but because I want things to be able to have a fun community and also be understandable to all types of role-players. Which also brings out the issue that I like to details things a lot to make sure members understand. Which results to... a lot of reading.
All in all, I'm more interested in having members enjoying the site along with me than having it one sided. I also find it fun to administrate and listen to member's thoughts and ideas and see what others would like to input in. The more they input, despite how silly it is, just shows how much they want to be part of the community and that alone makes me happy.
... I just wish I would open more than just two sites in my life time. /has so many WIP sites, omg.

Honestly, in the past, I've preferred being other people's co-admins more than being the admin myself but... I admin because I don't like the way other people admin, I don't like the sites I see out there but want to play in a certain genre, I don't fit in on other sites, I have my own unique view on how roleplay should be, and yep. That's how it goes for me. One of my sites was created because Myspace took a dive into crapsville and I wanted a place to RP with the friends I made there--too bad, because I don't RP with any of them anymore. And the other because I spent over a YEAR--no joke--joining sites in the game's genre/fandom until I got fed up and made my own. >.>
