I have no idea why there is no discussion for this incredible series yet. If you have read the manga versus those that are only watching PLEASE use spoiler tags and inidcate that you are spoiling something that has not yet aired in the animation! I don't want any spoilers because I might either, a.) flip my desk out my window or b.) sob into a melted mess on the floor from feels. I can not handle how many feels this show gives me. I don't think I'm physically capable of it.Seriously this show has one of the FIRST canon-presented ships in it that I adore and support with my entire being. Omg Asuna is so amazing *u* She's not whiny and overly-dependent and she can hold her own and is simply a bamf when it comes to stuff. ...and Kirito just gets all the girls. no questions asked. omg there's so much more I could say but having a discussion thread to yourself would be sad 8c THROW ME YOUR FEELS AND SHIPS AND FANGASMS OVER THIS GLORIOUS WORK OF ART. now join the conversation

...I'm one of the few minority who don't like this show. I fell in love with it the first time, had the rushing idea to even make an RP of it until I was beaten to it. The setting is glorious, the simplicity of the idea is amazing. Then a few episodes later with Kirito angsting and the anime focusing in temporary characters (aka basically die), it lost its impact on me completely. It was building up, then fell down. Asuna was great but I lost interest when she degraded to a moe character who needed to be saved, she was apparently held captive in a tower. The first few episodes really built up well but I didn't like how it simply fell down on Kirito alone where it centered to his encounters with his harem. I was hoping it would build up a strong cast of characters. They could die for all I care but instead of being episodic, I wish it made use of it to surround Kirito with proper supporting characters, not girls who would fawn over him instantly. I thought he was socially awkward? It was really well-played in the first episode then it zzz. I get that most people just fangirl over it though because hey, cute couple beating bad guys down like a badass, that's an easy recipe to make people all starry-eyed. But when I watched this show, I was thinking of .hack and after the first episode, I was so darn sure it was about to exceed that anime. I'm again one of those few minority who think that .hack isn't a masterpiece but it was good nonetheless. So I was disappointed later on when all the thrill and suspense of death and insanity calmed down to a typical fantasy anime, And despite my comments about Asuna, I'm pretty sure it's Kirito that made me drop this anime after a few episodes later. Don't get me wrong - I don't care if he's badass and gets all the girls. Or if he angsts. I'm guilty of liking that Dick Grayson but if he's not likeable enough to be funny and has to get dragged around by a bunch of characters instead so his character looks less gloomy - I don't really want to keep watching. I don't think it's a bias. It's normal to lean on something happier and humorous. Say, protagonists like Edward Elric and even Naruto. Anyway, woah, didn't expect this to become a wall of text. I guess I was semi-ranting and probably not what you want to see after such an enthusiastic post but there was this argument about SAO in Star-Crossed Anime Blog and I didn't really get to share my final input because Psgels dropped the show too. I just wanted to let out how disappointed I was with this series. As Psgels said, it could have definitely been good but it didn't play its strength in the end. It turned down some fans like me who were expecting the atmosphere from episode 1 to continue on in a roller-coaster ride.

holy crap a minority does exist /stares at this species
dont worry about saying you dont like it and why after a post of gushies and everything. the point of a discussion thread is to discuss it and that can't really be done if somebody doesnt point out things they don't like XD. at least you gave reasons-a-plenty as to why you dont like it versus just saying "I dont like it because I just dont".
to be completely honest I was completely disappointed with Asuna's status in ALO vs SAO because she went from not-normal-anime-girl (i.e. can actually hold her own in a fight and takes everything like a man) to damsel in distress. I considered stopping after SAO when I saw the first step into ALO because of that reason. But then I realized I would have hated myself for stopping something midway through
I sort of saw him as the socially awkward type too which is why, in my head, he's the loner of SAO until he warms up to a few people. So it kind of made me go "why does he get all the bitches" before my roommates just put the "main character powarz" into my head and I just left it at that.
another friend of mine that doesnt watch much anime said it sounded like .HACK when I told him about it, and .HACK is on my list of things to watch and/or read so I think I'll be doing a lot of comparing and contrasting on my own whenever I do get around to that series.
what's not to like about Dick Grayson
I think the reason I like Kirito as a character is because he actually gets shit done and doesn't always let his conscience get in the way like a typical good-guy. if he needs to get somewhere I sort of get the feeling he'll do what he can so long as it's not too outrageous or simply killing in cold blood. I think the main reason I like Asuna is because she isn't the typical whiny sort of girl you almost always see as a love interest in anime (I'm a minority there - I generally don't like canon pairings at all) and because she can fight. other than that not much.
to be honest I...may or may not have only half been paying attention to episodes 1-3 and really I came in around episode 4 about halfway through it. there might be some of me missing the roller coaster ride as you called it for that reason. whenever I attain the episodes for myself I'll be watching it over from the beginning and see if that changes. the amount of love I have for an anime has been proven to change in the past with a re-watching.

SAO's first episode was amazing. No questions asked. It was just utterly amazing. Then it just kinda went downhill from there, really. It lost it's appeal, imo, but I still didn't drop it because I had reasons to follow it - for Kirito's journey, for Asuna, etc etc. I shipped Kirito and Asuna so hard but then when they got married, which is what I wanted... I kinda... lost interest, lol. They weren't so interesting to me anymore. I just don't think it was to my taste, that's all.
LOL, season two. Can I just say. Incest. That incest ruined my life.
BUT LOL, I'M STILL WATCHING SAO DESPITE THAT. That's so weird. I usually drop anime really quickly if it gets horrible, but somehow I'm still watching this.
Also. I think it's been confirmed for another season? L-LOL. How long are they gonna drag it out?

omg the incest I wanted to die I also wanted Sugu to find out a LOT sooner than she did so it didn't get dragged out. like omg.
and the whole Asuna trying to get away. I will quote from a friend that watched that episode, "I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going"
&& bby murkles you should watch it <3

I also didn't like SAO, to be honest, but for different reasons. I can deal with the plot, even if the SAO arc ended weirdly. I can deal with the characters except for Kirito.
What I can't deal with is the setting. I'm one of those .hack fans who watched SAO for the similar setting but my MMORPG nitpickings didn't make me like the premise in general.
The entire problem with the first boss? Nobody would have died if SAO had a need vs greed system on rare loots like on, idk, almost every MMO out there. It's stupid to think that the last attacker always gets the drop, because that's no proper way of judging playing skill at all. Giving the drop to the one who deals the most amount of damage is useless too, because there are a lot of party roles that don't need to be the DPS and yet are still as important as the damage dealers.
Oh, and Sleep PK? Could have been prevented by a simple algorithm. Kayaba Akihiko aside, the rest of the company could have done a better job fixing the loopholes.
People told me that ALO would be more my style since it has magic ( I prefer magic-based classes ), but I am raging that Kirito just conveniently got his levels just because of a bug. Once again, kudos to the poor data management of the admins. I would understand if he's not the only one who got that, but that certain thing just borders on Gary Sue territory, and does it really have a plot significance or a proper reason why that happened?
I also don't like ALO's concept that you can only be stronger if you have a better physical ability. I mean, how about those who want to play Virtual MMOs, but have physical disabilities? That's unfair.
I can see its appeal for other people though, but it really could have been polished. ( To be fair, the first arc was originally written by the author when he was 15. ) And yeah, not surprised at a new season, given the current length of the Light Novel.
Spoiler PS: I only browsed the LNs so far, but right now I am amused because Kirito's GGO avatar looks like a girl, and I am also pissed off because why does he have a fucking sword in a fucking gun MMO and still manages to win fights? In an MMO setting, that's just unfair and unbalanced.
Sorry I ranted.

This. this this this
SAO.... now I have lots of feelings for it. Very ambivalent ones. First, its trying to replace my one true love .hack// with its fancy new virtual reality stuff that makes more sense than .hack// ever did... and its psychological thriller stuff that makes it more horrifying and heart wrenching and a;ldksfha;klf
Now I have a friend, and she didn't realize this was a romance anime when we started watching it. Halfway through the first arc... she was rolling around on the floor and screaming at our guy friends about how she had too many feels. It was rather scary.
ASLDFKAH BUT I HAVE FEELS TOO IM JUST BETTER AT KEEPING THEM TO MYSELF.
I haven't gotten to season two yet... well I have but i only saw the first episode of it. Uhg stupid cousin stupid incest... My friends are dropping it now, but I want to continue. I also wanna read the books (both manga and novels). It's a good anime, and I like how it fulfills my need for a show/manga about video games and character psychology.
Oh though let me say, I totally thought this was gonna end up like .hack. With the AI girl, and I was all "SAJLFDAH ITS LIKE AURA" and and and... well, like I said, I've only seen the anime so far. And well... i think they could have done a lot more with the SAO part of the story. There was so much that could have been explored! With Cardinal being rogue, and maybe more systems breaking away from their programing like that girl and... I dunno. I wanted more out of it, but it was still beautiful nonetheless.

I was one of the ones who started watching SAO without knowing it was supposed to be a romance. So, I was rather dissapointed when I got to the episode where Kirito and Asuna got together, and I was immediately turned off when she undressed, and stuff. So, that was the last episode I watched. That kind of stuff really skeeves me out.
I wish it wasn't a romance, the setting had a lot of potential for some cool purely-action oriented story. Of course, I'm the kind of guy who is seventeen, likes their shounen, and is still a six year old when it comes to romance.
Before it got to the romance part, though, I was rather dissapointed by the lack of Klein in the series, at least from what I saw. :c He was my favorite character. Of course, generally speaking I usually fall for the bit characters who end up with no face time. So, I should have expected it.

I like SAO to a point, I like the plot overall, some of the side characters, the fact that the anime itself was done visually wise really well. What I couldn't stand was the direction that the series went in. I mean Asuna went from a kickass to a bratty little princess peach by the end of the first season, and the second arc she really isn't much better. It screams "mario come and save me." I mean, I personally think they should have just ended SAO at the end of the Sword Art Online Arc.
Don't get me wrong, the second arc is decent, it's just... why didn't it end? The incest with Sugu just isn't my cup of tea. I mean, it's really just awkwardly put there in my opinion. I wanted action when I started this anime, not romance.
I wanted bad ass Asuna, not
Dear Kirito-kun (Mario), I've been kidnapped (by Bowser), come and save me. AKA beat all the levels, bosses, and enemies to rescue me from the castle. /cry
The original SAO plot is great. The side characters, Yui-chan, Klein, that animal tamer, and even that guild of people who died were great. I just didn't like how they turned it out, it had so much potential but fuck.
It's still a better anime than gundam seed.

just finished watching SAO right about now and i must say i really liked it.
only. the first half of it. i should've stopped watching, i really should have because and the incest was introduced the series (i love incest but you can't do that when you've got us all hooked on another ship) and the fact that asuna had not fighting time at all pretty much ruined it for me.
okay and um. kirito was spending too much time with leafa is it like did he get with her or summat because i thought asuna was gonna end up with kirito and have a heart-rending moment there
basically. the ending of the SAO arc was perfect and we should all just disregard the ALO arc. at least, my reasoning. i ship kirito with asuna. bad-ass asuna that can hold her own, lightning flash asuna. not the 'help i'm stuck in this birdcage KIRITO SAVE ME'
and i do have to agree what the hell was the lack of klein i loved klein.

Hey don't badmouth the gundams you gundam >:C i'm not even kidding, i watched gundam seed every night for four months or something on cartoon network, i didn't have internet back thenAs for the mechanics of SAO ^ Every League of Legends player. YOU ******* KILL STEAL ****** Unless support. But mind you, when I first started watching SAO, it made me want to play a game, any game, at all. All of a sudden, playing an mmorpg was cool again to me, lol. my last mmo might as well be ragnarok OTL idk, i kind of was okay with it being a romance thing, justified that, game relationships exists like hell yo, and it's actually kinda common in big game communities to have actual couple and shiet. You've said all there is to say about the damsel-in-distress thing.
