I think it's been on a while - I noticed this in my bookmarks - but pixiv artists have been taking down their art because of constant stealing and edits of their works. I know most of us just borrow them but using them without permission is still stealing. There have been some discussion of Pixiv shutting down to western users because of this. If you're going to use pixiv art, saying pixiv or zerochan isn't enough. You have to directly link to the artist's page, not pixiv. You can always use reverse image search to find it.
I know it must be tough to do this. It might not even solve half the issue because some would really NOT want their art to be used at all. But for animanga sites and graphics maker, try your best to credit anyway. Even though the Japanese may not be able to see our pages, it would spread in the Internet from there, appearing in searches and being passed to person to person until they just see their art reposted without permission.
I'm pretty sure the RPing community is guilty on this big time. At least people put sources in tumblr.

I actually have written about finding image sources through zerochan gangnam-style.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tutorials&action=display&thread=2609this also works for artists who have personal websites and not just pixiv. I implore people to remember that pixiv is not just an image site, but a platform from which many illustration careers are launched. with increased reverse image search and google-fu, there is really no excuse for not sourcing art properly. please, think of the artists.

adding my two cents here
it's not just pixiv you should be crediting too! tumblr artists are amazing artists, and no doubt if you take art from there you should be crediting them as well! p. much, if you take art from somewhere and it isn't yours then you should be crediting directly.
also, just b/c you can't read japanese doesn't mean you get to use the art. google translate is there for a reason guys. if an artist says not to repost/edit/change their art at all you have to respect their rules, no matter what language it's in.

more two cents. this is a partial list of pixiv artists who have requested that people not use, repost or edit their art in any form. for reference. however, discussion question. if people are trying to make sure that art doesn't get stolen, then what do we do about icons? do we have to go and post in every thread/post/sig where the icon came from? only seems like a logical extension - it wouldn't be fair to pick and choose to whom we give credit.

On the icon thing - a lot of pixiv artists are aware their work gets used for icons, and I think they tend to be a bit more lax in that respect as it's not their entire work being put up without permission. The ones who don't like their art used as icons talk about them specifically and separate from reposting their images. You need to look for the word 「アイコン」i'm pretty sure followed by something like 〜しません、〜ません. Most icon makers have a list of credits on their own pages - I tend to credit the maker in my photobucket, and from there it's easy enough to get to the artist.
