warning. inner anger being unleashed.
i am honestly most attracted to rpgs and websites which have hospitable staff and members, but no, i don't mean those butt-kissing posers who scream "is this a guestie? a possible new member?" then treat you like a scrap of rubbish once their mission to collect new victims to terrorise is complete. i mean the rpgs that are genuinely interested in wanting more people to plot with, and befriend. i love that kind of thing. so basically what i'm saying is --
DON'T PRETEND YOU LOVE ME THEN TREAT ME LIKE A COCKROACH IN YO' CHEERIOS.
also i like a clear, defined layout with a minimalistic colour scheme. oh oh, i personally prefer it when the cbox is laid out nicely too since i tend to spent 62% of my time procrastinating in it.

What hits first: The Appearance
-Colors/contrast: Now I'm not usually too judgmental about skins, but if it causes me eyeburn due to neon colors flying everywhere, or I have to squint to make out text that is extremely similar to its background color, I'm unlikely to look further, as this often indicates lack of experience on the staffs' part (or they are 12year olds), and also I want to keep my eyes. :c
-Font size: If the font is small, I'm going to assume the staff do not care about those who have bad eyesight or value appearance over functionality and accessibility. If they're not considerate enough to at least make their font readable, then even with my lack of eye problems, I'd wonder about what they value and the type of people they are. - This may result in me asking them about the possibility of increasing font size just to see their response to people who might request this c: they can refuse, but be nice about it~
-Forum width/fluid layout: If the forum is fixed width, that's all good unless a big chunk of the forum is cut off on small screens (and I use small screens a lot as they're so easy to carry around, and so do a lot of other people in the world, especially as ultrabooks are becoming more popular) or if the sidebar hides a large part of the forums. Good web design includes accessibility - and not allowing accessibility for smaller screens is cutting off a portion of the potential audience. I know people who will simply X out of a site if they can't read or browse it properly.
Looking further:
-Plot and Systems: Is it interesting to me? Does it appeal to me? I'm not someone who enjoys too many stats as I like writing more than number crunching when rping, so if there's a ton of numbers controlling traits I'm not likely to look further. Also, have I seen this kind of plot in every other site I've browsed?
-Threads & Member plots: Are people posting? Everyone's definition of "active" is different - but I definitely look for IC posts to count the site as active, as ooc chats do not count in my books. Thus, if their IC forums are hidden, I'm out immediately~ Are they having fun? Enjoying themselves? What's the general speed of replies? I don't mind waiting for replies, but I do mind if I wait a month for every single post in every single thread :'D DO people bother to finish threads (if the site isn't so new that this doesn't apply)? As constant flakiness is boring :P
-The participants: -Who doesn't like friendly people? c: If members and staff are friendly and seem to be enjoying themselves, and do no ignore guests in the chat box, then yay. c:

okay my turn.
- high contrast. i have difficulty picking out shades sometimes, so if your skin consists merely of three degrees of dark gray i will be hammering that back button. - posts and applications of some minimum substance and thought. yeah, short posting seem to get a lot of attention from today's site makers, but if everyone's doing <100 words then that doesn't suit my style of writing. - people not generally having 10+ characters. the max i've ever played on one site is three and people picking up fcs and throwing them aside after a few posts doesn't make me feel too welcome. (i can't tell if people will commit to threads.) - no fixed sidebars. many people use them. just as many people use them badly. since i have a short screen stuff usually gets cut off, and most of the time that's the cbox's fields. so, y'know, i can't chat. which is not fun. - nothing too flashy. putting hovers on everything, especially things like category titles which don't need them, at least for me is pretty amateurish. - plot pages not being a huge emphasis. i don't personally use them and prefer just to let things develop organically or through the chatbox. - animanga fcs, but that goes without saying. - everyone playing by the same rules. if i see the staff giving their friends super-speshul privileges over other members, i as a newbie won't be too enthused about being ignored.

DON'T PRETEND YOU LOVE ME THEN TREAT ME LIKE A COCKROACH IN YO' CHEERIOS.
If it helps, I try to treat everyone like they're a cockroach in my cheerios.
I help them get the blasted hell out of my cheerios and then tell them they're being a ninny for trying to swim in my cheerios in the first place.
