I looked at the PM settings out of curiosity and it's a pain to set up and not retroactive. If it's such a worry then you can always bitch about the admin off-site instead? Also. forum.jcink.com/index.php?showtopic=16906www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15568Garden - every reason in this thread seems utterly trivial to me, because I am not one to let something like 'I have to press a few more buttons' get in the way of the bigger picture. If it sounds like I'm attacking people - sorry, but I honestly think it's stupid. Like I said, people can do what they want but I don't have to think it's not trivial nitpicking.

My reason for not liking jcink is very, very trivial. My phone refuses to load jcink sites and because it is slower to load than PB, I won't join them. I like checking in when I'm at work and when I can't access the cbox/chat to people when I get a break I feel very left out.
Unfortunately for me, I live in Australia so as it is I'm out of sync with everyone else, working while they're home, so those few instances where I get to chat with people make all the difference and waiting for fifteen minutes out of my forty-five minute lunch break to try and get a jcink site to load just doesn't bode well with me. xD
It's a trivial and stupid reason, I know, but that's why I like to stick to PB.

Out of curiosity Milachan, what's your phone service provider? (you don't have to say so if you don't want to but) I'm also Australian, using a dying iPhone 4 with Virgin (also live in a country area) and I have never had any problems loading Jcink sites.
Jcink has a free and automatic mobile version of the forum itself, and I've always found the best way to use a cbox on a smartphone is to actually open it in its own window and not have it on-site which is a hassle. I can't use the one on here on my phone, for example, because the post details get cut off.

Optus with an iPhone 4S. My service is pretty substandard in terms of reception at work cause it's a big cement building but it seems to like proboards better than Jcink. xD I don't really know why. I use the cboxes in their own window though too, Idk. For some reason it's just always worked better for me.
Like I said though, I know it's very trivial and a stupid reason, it's just my main one. x3

That's so weird because Virgin also uses the Optus network (and I always assumed we'd get sub-standard piggyback service). Are you trying to load the web forum or the mobile version?

The web forum. It has also been a while though, because the last jcink site I joined was back in.. March. And it died fairly quickly so I haven't really given it a thought since. xD

If you have the cbox in a separate window anyways, I'd recommend using the mobile site. That's usually how I browse jcink sites if they are being really slow.

There's nothing bad about discussion threads like this one where all the small, stupid details of preference come out. The point of threads like this is to understand why people prefer this and that so you could convince them that it's not so bad. Like, it's been mentioned that having to use <br> and <p> tends to be a hassle in jcink so we reasoned that well, you get used to it and you get to space codes to make it neat, which is nice. Skull also pointed out about simply taking out dohtml and I think you could also use the pre tag? I haven't tested it yet.
And this is just between two forum hosts anyway. If you're picking between two popular ones, I think small details would make the difference but it doesn't mean it's how people would treat all forum hosts in general. Like I guess if you ask people what their top 3 forum of choice are, I bet Jcink and Proboards would be in it.
Sorry that I've been oversensitive and thanks to all who kept posting to keep things calm. Katya apparently left me in-charge of taking care of this thread in case it explodes because she's busy skydiving in volcanoes on weekends. Obviously GS is too cool for the staff to take care of.
Now who's going to explain to Minnie what happened when she sees this

What's 'bad' about discussion threads like this is that they're inherently geared towards negative differences. I'm all for a 'this thing doesn't work for me' thread but when people start talking about 'this group' vs 'that group' and 'I'll never join' or 'you can't get me to change over', it creates an atmosphere of divisiveness.
What Novas said - it shouldn't be about refusing to use paper because it's yellow. It should be about trying to smooth out the creases.
I am all for this topic with a positive bent. Unfortunately, I honestly do not believe that has been the case in all of the replies here. Constantly talking about distinct separate communities (touched on eg by the idea of membership culture being tied to host mechanics) is just telling everyone at large that these divides are real and exist and petty differences are serious business when thinking about a host to use.
No.
The only thing that should matter to an admin when deciding on a host is what they want. No admin should have to worry that 'the group won't support them' because they chose a different host, which is exactly the vibe that always comes from threads like this where the posts inevitably turn in to what is different whilst talking almost completely about the negatives. You can say that helpful things have been said, but they're set against existing ideas that are presented with terminology to suggest that they're not likely to change. You know who that doesn't give confidence to? Prospective admins reading this. Current admins reading this.
I do not believe in ranking hosts as a member, this should be obvious by now, and the idea is still ludicrous to me. I still agree 100% with Novas' post which is so great I'll just quote it again because it's something I really think people need to think more about.
I support helping people deal with little things. I tried to troubleshoot someone's phone problems just a few posts up. But I'd rather they appear in threads where it's clear the poster has an open mind and is willing to learn about other hosts than in ones where little annoyances are presented as a be-all and end-all to where they will RP.
