Why do sites do it
Fear of plagiarism?
Because I think it's a major turn off.

there are sites that do this and yet are accepting new members? that's weird. i mean plagiarism sucks yeah but...that's not gonna stop anyone who really wants to steal a post lol? the only scenario i could see that making sense in is if it's a closed membership rp.

honestly it's a big turn off for me because i like to see the kind of stuff that i can expect from the rp, from length to style.

When I did it for AT it was because early on in our roleplay we had someone stealing posts word for word (with no regard for their partner's RP on the site they were stealing from) but upon suggestion I tried to reinstate guest access to the boards. Honestly I actually forgot they were hidden until someone reminded me. >> Which actually reminds me now that I think something's still haywire somewhere.

I always wonder what people are trying to hide. I think "oh, I bet they're hiding TOS breaking posts so people don't report them", and I get skeeved out and click the back button. This is because the very first time I ran into hidden boards and registered, I was greeted to graphic posts taking up basically all of the recent history. It was pretty unpleasant, since it was back in my library-internet days.

I lose interest really quickly with sites that do that, but I never thought about it from a plagiarism point of view o.O I always assumed they were trying to hide if it was inactive. Same with sites that hide the members online.

i don't really care if you hide threads, if i like the site enough i'll deal.
but it's a GIANT turn-off for me when you hide the applications and the plot pages. how am i supposed to find the characters i really want to plot with and stalk if i'm not allowed to read up on their applications and stalk plot pages? on a site aside from members and plot, characters make or break if i'll join.
and returning to the original topic, people steal roleplay posts what. why would even think of doing that.

When I did it for AT it was because early on in our roleplay we had someone stealing posts word for word (with no regard for their partner's RP on the site they were stealing from) You could steal posts even when you're registered...so nothing we can about that though I didn't think that seriously happened. If someone stole my posts...I think I'll be flattered. I think it's really the site's lost if they hide it. I know a lot of people would get into the site just by seeing the pure quality in posts. It really makes NO sense though if they hide even the plot pages. You don't want to show to guests plain advertisements and chat.

Yeah, it was just that they weren't registered at the time so we couldn't even be like "IP ban" >< But honestly after it was resolved I forgot I'd turned the boards off. Thankfully this thread reminded me to make the effort to make them visible again so (I hope) that about it is fixed. I prefer them shown too, I just had a very distressed member and didn't want to get them more upset.
'Twas a call I am okay with having made. x3
Edit: Definitely on the plots and stuff though. That's always visible for me. Shows that people are there to be plotted WITH.

This is honestly a huge turn off for me. I normally think a number of options, "Maybe the site is dying?" or "Are they breaking ToS?"
But honestly, before I even think about joining I click the recent posts to see what kind of members a site has.
