say you left a site. say it wasn't so much as a conscious decision, more that things came up and you kind of faded away and felt awkward with dropped threads etc.
say it's since been several more months.
would you ever go back? or is there some kind of taboo to returning a site that has since been left?
what would influence such a decision, aside from the basic 'things on-site have changed to be fresh or something'?

If I liked the site enough and I really still wanted to be a part of it, I would go back, but be ready to explain myself and the situation that I was in where I left everyone without notice. I hate doing it, kind of like a personal peeve, so I'd probably apologize profusely for it.
I would have to be very interested in the site and its members, otherwise I wouldn't care to go back. An understanding staff team is also a plus, as well as a decent member-base.

I usually give proper goodbyes to sites I leave so I can often come back at ease. I'll go back if I want to unless I feel it's extremely awkward. I do get that there may be some taboo in it, especially if the reason for leaving was something more dramatic and staff-related. Getting on the wrong side of the staff is easily a reason for any rpers to leave and never come back.

I wanted to go back to a site I was a part of once but when I checked, my account was deleted so... I decided not to. I hate starting over. xD

I think it all depends on how you left, but overall I think that it's best to always A.) tell the truth and B.) not to be embarrassed you left. Any good admin will know that sometimes, people just leave, either because of muse, computer troubles, or hell just living life. So while giving an apology to an admin would be polite, I think it would be best to save your apologies for those who you affected such as people you had plotted with, who took up a wanted ad for your character, etc.
Though honestly, I think one of the worst things a person can do is lie about why they left. Because it makes you seem insincere about your site membership, and it also just reflects badly on you. It also leads to bad situations such as: "Oh sorry I vanished my computer broke OTL" "...OK, we saw you still rping on this other site the whole time so it musta not been THAT broke".
See how not fun that is? Always tell the truth.
This actually reminds me, if you read this Terra, and Ambrosia peeps, I'm sorry OTL

I had people who returned, and I was glad to receive them, to brief them about what they had missed and to plot actively their return. Unfortunately, most of them disappeared again after a while... yoyo was in their nature. In my case... When I tried to return to a site, it was because the site got revived. So it was no excuse needed. I mean, I never left a site which was still active, I left when I had nobody to write with. The revival, in that case, didn't last long and now the site is deleted.
