I have a story to tell. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been writing. And if some people are missing opportunities for various reasons... should I do the same, and let the stories roam in my head, unwritten, just because a writing partner who has an appropriate character isn't available? Would you write the story alone, using NPCs, if the right characters aren't available for a reason or another? Or would you simply give up the story? There is a third option, of course, to wait until a character would be available... but what if then it wouldn't be the appropriate moment storywise? I am thinking to write it alone, when the site is being quieter and I have more free time for writing. This way, those who missed the opportunity of getting involved (and other fans) can read it and enjoy it. Maybe some of them would see this way the potential they have missed. Sometimes it is really... disconcerting that if I want to have a steadily advancing story, I have to write it all myself. I have a story to tell... and when I have noone to rely upon than myself... it feels this way. Yes, I have some of them in the works, but given that I have no time pressure for them (nobody left to wait for an answer) I tend to post them when ended, or when significantly advanced. At the same time, I wonder, if I am writing in the stories where I don't need anyone else... as an administrator, do I send the wrong message, something like "I don't care about you all and I prefer only my characters", which is definitely not true?I am writing in all stories how they come. And I write in the ones I have alone only when there are no others to answer.

I can really understand what you mean in a slightly different situation. Its like how people take canons with pre-determined relations with other canons but until those canons are taken, you're awkwardly alone on the site- you can plot and such, but its like the character is missing a piece. And if your character relies on that other character for some points in their personality, its kind of awkward to change it once its taken whenever that might be, if ever-
But yes, generally if an administrator wants to make a site plot move at all, it takes some leadership and usually people follow once you start breaking the snow. Sometimes they don't- and you can't really force them to.
Usually when that happens to me, I just don't write the post and infer that its happened with the related characters, after agreeing upon what's basically happened ooc or you can go ahead and write it yourself, I just don't because I don't bother going through the effort at some point.
I hope that helps if at all.

If that happens to me I usually do it somewhere others than the forums because that way I can and my members can refer back to it but it doesn't feel like I was avoiding the RP side, rather just writing a little extra piece for my character/s or for the site itself.
Glass, with the canon thing... Gosh I know.

I prefer to do it on the site, because the story belongs to the site. It is not AU, but an intrinsec part of the bigger story.

Oh I don't mean off the site just not in the RP section, like in a specific writing or general board. That way it's there for those to read but feels less like you're unhappy with the role playing side I guess?

I write a ton of NRNs when the mood strikes or the story calls for it so I would say just go for it! When you have a story to tell, write it! I read everybody's NRNs and they read mine so I don't think it's too egocentric or shows that you're unsatisfied. And if people don't want to read it, their loss. At least it's there for everybody to check back with when you reference it later!
However, I will say that it does suck if you really, really want somebody to pick up a role and play the other characters but nobody will or the ones who did aren't around. I really feel that because I have, for example, a guy with a pre-established girlfriend. I thought (as I usually do), "HEY, why not see if somebody wants to pick her up so I don't have to NPC her or make her myself?" The person who picked her up is awesome and all but... She also seems to have very little interest in RPing with me or my character. She often talks about offering her girl to plots with other people--even when I say "Hey, what about her boyfriend?!" And a couple weeks ago, she said, "OMG, I wanna use [Boyfriend's Face Claim] for a future character!" I was like "Dude, he's already in play. HE'S YOUR CHARACTER'S BOYFRIEND."
OH RP. It's never without its drama, even the tiniest ones... I was just disappointed. I was looking forward to their rocky relationship and I really wanted to see if the two of them would ever grow. (It was a case of my guy dating her out of convenience, starting to love her, and realizing it was really just convenience for her. His lonely heart... I would love to RP it more... :/)
