i got that itch to join a RL site and after looking at them, any of them i wanted to join pretty much consistently had size 8 - 9 sized font using a font face that made it pretty much illegible. this wasn't even a few of them. it was probably half. the ones that didn't didn't have layouts i cared for in general. i think you change change the default minimum font size in browsers to something larger, which makes anything smaller than that font show up larger! well, at least i know you can do it in google chrome. She could, but it's really just a flaw in design when you have to do something to fix something that is the main point. Like, reading is important to rping. So, naturally, you shouldn't have to fix your settings just for the sake of something that should be a given. Important matters, like fine-print, sure. A hobby to kill time? No. Plus, I had that problem and changing the font setting didn't work. The admin was nice enough to actually size-up the font, so to that admin--ily.

i used to exclusively only rp on rl sites but over the last couple of years i've switched entirely over to anime communities and i'm not exactly sure why. at some point using real faces became uncomfortable to me but it's not really the deciding factor, i know i can do it and not feel super bad about it. i guess i just kind of got stuck in a comfort zone associated with the anime community and getting outside of that zone became too much effort. i barely even roleplay anymore thanks to being at a really unstable emotional point and i've become one of those horrible site hoppers!!!! (i'm so sorry lmfao)
but really everyone here is valid in their feelings and reasons for why they don't want to join rl sites and what turns them off from them. its okay to not like certain things and its ok to not want to get out of your comfort zone. it's also totally valid to like rl sites and see all of their good points/not agree with other people's issue. everyone should like what they like, thats totes mcgoats okay!!!!!

From the start of my life as roleplayer, I've only joined animanga sites. I've never had any super strong urge to join RL roleplays and I can't really explain why beyond just not being interested. I think I just have a natural (and mostly arbitrary) inclination towards animanga sites. I think they're more fun, they seem more active, and it's easier to immerse myself in them. They're really quite the closest I can get to creating my own personal anime/manga so I suppose that's the appeal.

It's easy for us to count how many people have ideas different from us, and we feel like those numbers are enough to validate the kind of world we live in. Don't let them stand out in your head. The world - the Internet - is a huge place.
I guess what I'm trying to say is when someone says "well, I'd join if it's an animanga site..." don't feel down. You can always change that to a completely different excuse and the result would be the same thing. Take note that the people in this discussion thread is no more than twenty members and the site itself covers only 100 members a day out of 1k members. So what one, few, or many say in this community is not an impact that you should really be concerned of.
So just express, learn, and have fun. We're not here trying to change the entire rping world's perspective, fighting for the rights of RL sites. This here is just a very small, trivial piece (as konya mentioned) of everything.

Honestly I love looking through here - even if it is more Animanga based. I'd join some but I get so busy with my own site that I end up running out of time - and again I'd feel odd. I'd feel like "zomg is this the right thing? Do I do this now with this picture? How do I get an icon". I'm used to reading Mangas... like Hellsing. Castlevania. Gankutsuou.... etc. I don't know how popular they are and just stuff.

Going off of what tanz said, GS is animanga bias because its members stick to that site style like a slew of other resource sites have a real-life bias.

I don't join IRL RPGs because I RP to get the hell away from real life. Plus, real life RPGs - even with interesting, original plots - really bore me. When I am thinking or imagining a story, or developing a character, I automatically think of it in anime-manga style. Any IRL RPG I have ever been on, I have been all "WELP... THIS ISN'T WORKING FOR ME." I don't even watch anime or read manga like I used to, but I have been RPing in the anime community since I was 12-13, so I think it's just how I was 'raised' in the RP world.

okay here i go
i love rl rps. i've been doing rl rps since i moved away from warrior cats (which was a LONG time ago). the most important thing to me has always been the community of the site (and YES if the site is shiny because i'll admit i'm a shallow person like that) but again, most importantly, the communities have always treated me well. the face claims don't bother me really, as i don't mind anime or rl either way, i've just been consistently exposed to nice people and good rps that make me happy c:

i don't do rl rps because i haven't felt a draw to them. i almost joined one about zombies recently but :x i just didn't. other than that a big deciding factor is that i don't really know a lot of celebs or anything to use so i just stay with anime where life is easy.

It's funny because most of the reasons I'm reading here are all the reasons I didn't want to RP in animanga games, like focusing too much on how it looks, too weird, etc. I didn't actually start using anime FCs until maybe 2 years ago (?) and I detested it before then. I used to be unable to see an image of one of my favorite anime characters with some other name and some other personality--all I saw was NARUTO or ICHIGO, not the OC. It irked me. However, I started a fantasy forum with anime FCs and then merged it with my Fire Emblem forum (where I never made any OCs because I didn't want to use anime FCs) and since then, I've been totally fine with it.
I guess the point there is, don't knock it until you try it. Haha! And if you still don't like it when you try it, nobody's forcing you to play outside your comfort zone.
But yeah... I still prefer RL FCs. I'm much more comfortable casting a real person to a part than I am applying an actual character to my own character. Plus, there's the whole issue of art theft... eh, such a headache.
ETA: Just read some other replies (previously only read the first page) and my RL site is set in a unique place, doesn't have a word count and most definitely doesn't focus on the flashy. Pfft, none of us even use templates, for example and only one member even bothers to use blockquote and justify to format her posts. So not all RL sites are the same.
As for knowledge of celebs... I like hunting for faces so... If somebody needed help, I'd be happy to oblige. But I admit, my strongest knowledge base is currently kpop celebrities. (Doesn't mean I don't know a good deal of celebs outside of that sphere, though!)
