How often do you recycle your characters? Do you do it often? Do you have a certain set of characters that you make? Do you feel like people know that you're on a site based on your character? IDK, I thought this would be an interesting thread.
For me it all really depends. Sometimes I have crazy muse for a certain character, and I feel like I have to play them or there will be this kind of nagging in the back of my head. I've recycled a bunch of characters, any character that I recycle I'm proud of. I like them.
Sometimes, if I'm rping with certain people I'll recycle my characters because I really liked the plots that we had going on, on a previous site.
Sometimes I just make all new characters??? Yeah.

i generally prefer to create new characters for sites.
however if it's been a while since i played an old char or i feel they would fit in a site particularly well, or if a bunch of friends are apping old chars they had relationships with, i'll bring someone out.

I don't recycle all my characters, but for various reasons, it happens for a few special ones. They are either recycled as my tropes (under fresh FCs) or as my babies (under the same FCs). I like playing sassy, sarcastic mocking women, but my babies are junk and conchita and i recycle them without shame. I don't do it sooo often because I like expanding my dollhouse 8) but i will do it when I feel I can't get enough of a character type and my muse beckons.

All the fucking time I can't bring myself to part with them. If I do, the new one always ends up with some sort of traits from the old one, to the point where it might as well be the old character, recycled. I've tried making tons of new characters and it never works out. I get too attached to playing the one, usually because my experience role playing with them is so positive and fun/interesting/addicting/etc.
i'll admit to having to use the same fc :c i'm bad, i know, it's the personality/behaviorisms that really matter, but it never feels the same if I have to use someone completely different. I-I molded my character on their original fc, i want to keep them that way ;A;
Obviously I do make the occasional new character though, otherwise I wouldn't have more than one to recycle.

It...depends. I used to recycle a certain pair of characters all the time, because at the time I played them I was joining sites made by a dear friend of mine who liked recycling site ideas as well as coming up with original ones.
...Yeah, that's how I'm going to word that. *coughs*
Any way, I don't exactly recycle any more. Sometimes I'll reuse a concept if I haven't explored it in awhile. For example, I absolutely adore playing happy-go-lucky sadomasochists who aren't at all what they seem. I have had several characters like this in the past, and am currently playing one now. And even though it's the same character concept, each one has different supporting traits, hobbies, pasts, and purposes in life. I also like playing surly heroines.
Once in a while, if I can think of a way to recycle a character, I will. But if I do recycle them the latest version will always be better than the last in my opinion[/s].

i think i have just one or two characters that i recycle, one (a dude) of them being one that i recycle all the time.
i usually recycle if i want to join a site with one character because it makes it easier for me to play my dude instead of think up new characters. but if i stick around the site more, i might make some other originals if i have time.
but like others have said it all just depends. i also always recycle my one dude because i have endless supplies of muse for him and i've used him so much he's second nature to me. it really makes rping effortless and fun~

I wouldn't say I recycle the exact same character since I tend to come up with a new one for each site I join, but I tend to reuse a lot of the same traits. Especially snarkiness, cause I can't don't do sincerity

yes, and no.
i recycle names and fcs, and i tend to put the same traits for them regardless of how they really are, but how they turn out and what they end up doing changes depending on the context.
i don't deny that they all react similarly to different situations, though. you could argue that i end up playing the same person over and over again because of how not-varied they are in terms of action and reaction.

50% of the time.
Mostly because I'm lazy and really, fleshing out a character for me, thinking about their personality and back story, takes like three hours for me to do, so I just tend to use an old character, and edit said character in a way that they can fit the plot of the site.
But in the case that I actually join a site that has a plot concept that is 'new and unique' I tend to make a brand new character based on what interests me. So actually for my case it depends on the site. If it's a pokemon site, I tend to cycle through like, four characters. If it's a new site, say a superpower one, I don't hesitate making a different character who has a different mindset altogether.

I DON'T RECYCLE CHARACTERS >:C that's an insult. One site is not enough for my characters' story. They transcend time and forums, developing online and offline.
But that's only for my Digimon and Pokemon OCs. Initially I just had Pokemon OCs then I fell in love with my bunch of characters from Sysbreak and so I welcomed my Digimon OCs in Valhalla.
Sometimes, I make alternate versions of that char to fit in a different setting/universe. Same kind of person but slightly altered background and different focus on the concept and theme. They have the same first name but different fc and last name.

I HATE recycling characters. I tried it 2-3 times, and I just couldn't come to terms with how this Bob Johnson wasn't the same as the last Bob Johnson. So I no longer recycle characters but I do recycle ideas that I really loved/wanted to do but never got a chance to do properly.

I "recycle" pretty much all the time. I'd actually say instead that there are certain archetypes or personalities that I'm very comfortable with. Often when I'm entirely new to a site--and I don't even know anybody there at all--I'll fall back on an archetype that I'm confident with and know I can write well. It's sorta like I want to put my best face forward, you know?
I've copied and pasted personalities onto new characters quite often, although I don't quite do that for histories, since those are often setting-specific. I do recycle entire concepts and try to stick as close to a former character often enough. It's just because, let's be real here, the average site doesn't last for very long, and if I feel a character has unexplored potential, I'll adapt them to a new site if I think they fit the setting.
The adapting part is important; I think it's disrespectful to basically completely copy and paste everything, especially a history. When I wrote long-form paragraph apps, the last few paragraphs of a personality section for me always detailed how the character felt and/or was influenced by aspects of the site's setting that makes it unique. If I'm not drawn to the site's concept, then I wouldn't have applied there anyway. It'd be silly of me to NOT get all into how the setting would change a certain character from how I wrote them at a different site. The adapting is fun for me, and also something I take really seriously, sort of like writing an epic AU fanfic.
Like, I played an OC Sailor Saturn once, and she was a very young mother that had a lot on her plate. She dealt with themes of bringing new life and the responsibilities that came with it. The site died early, and I brought her over to a supernatural site, where she had a demon baby and was exiled from a sorcerer clan. Her personality was basically the same, as were the challenges she faced, but her history was entirely different.
