THE ROCKS WITH HOLES ARE WARM IN MY HAND

sophia is careful to avoid puncturing the umbrella on the low-hanging branches of the forested trail. she has every intention of returning it the next day. she thinks about what her younger brother would say, and sophia can't help but agree that she deserved the consequence of forgetting to check the weather forecast for that day. should have, but didn't.

she holds the umbrella handle closer to her chest and cannot help but feel that it is a good thing to be liked like this.

The field hockey coach canceled practice due to the rain, but Thalia was still hyped with adrenaline. While the rest of the girls shuffle into the locker room and started to pull on their normal clothes, Thalia took off jogging around the field. 

The other girls wave goodbye to her from atop the hill, and she keeps running forward when the field angles away, down into the woods. There's a trail through here that passes by her house, and she wants a hot shower directly after this run. Not a minute later. 

Ahead of her is the bright red of an umbrella, low among the trees, that she recognizes instantly. Thalia skids to a halt in a spray of mud before realizing it isn't her twin clutching the black handle, his damp scruff of blue hair jammed awkwardly against a cloth frame that's too short for him.

"That's Zahir's," she says redundantly. "Is he not with you?"

sophia stops walking, the rain rippling around her feet. the voice is familiar enough, but she turns around anyway.

"film appreciation is today. he should be leaving school soon if he hasn't already." she supposes that thalia wouldn't know his schedule if she was at athletic practice every day. it's pretty apparent that zahir isn't hiding behind a tree so sophia can be fairly certain that the question was rhetorical. she chooses to answer literally, if only to shorten the conversation as much as possible. a rainy, humid trail was hardly her ideal choice for a lengthy conversation. "no, he left the umbrella with me." he had claimed to own spares, and sophia saw no reason not to believe him.

thalia had asked a question, and she gave her an answer. sophia sees no further obligation to stay behind. she turns back to her path and continues the trek back home.
