Is completely subjective to each person and the app of course, so we'll just be specific.
Normally, apps that involve the list format takes me half an hour. I think I dedicate more time searching for art and fc. If it asks me for an rp sample, I just BS through it honestly. I hate rp samples :c but I do see why they may be necessary.
But apps that aren't as simple as that though take me hours. The app I just worked with took me 3 hours? And it isn't even done yet. I stopped because I was already losing my train of thought and felt it wasn't being cohesive anymore.
I don't think working on an app that long is really worth it. Besides that app, I haven't taken any app that demands so much detail.
In general though, fc/icon hunting takes all my time lol. Like, all day time. The sad part is I don't even regret it.

To me, it might take me a few hours to a few days (with breaks, of course). It depends on my available time and on the research I need.
But nobody knows, because I register the character only when the application is ready.
And yes, I like my character bios detailed, because this is how I am getting acquainted with the character. Once the bio is fleshed up, with personality and history which don't contradict one another, but which go well together, then I know my character and how to write him properly in any story.

i usually breeze though apps in fifteen minutes to half an hour, mostly because i rarely stick to more than the bare bones of an app for playing a character if it's an oc, and i rarely, if ever, play canons these days. the longest oc apps i've ever worked on were all freeform, and that was because i enjoyed writing them. freeform apps always tend to stick more for ocs for me rather than the typical list/history/personality, because it's more like a first post at writing them and test-driving rather than putting down what i think they'll be.

Completing an application for me takes anywhere from a few minutes to several days. It really just depends on the site and what sort of character I'm making at the time. If the site has an amazing plots and I have a clear cut character concept in my mind, I get really excited and go into a frenzy where I feel like I need to list every detail about them, whether it be relevant or not. I'll even write a brief description on their eating and sleeping habits and put research into what that behavior means. LOL. I just get so overwhelmed and obsessed with making their application as thorough as it can be. But in the end, I tend to be really proud of them, and most of these type of characters end up being added to my permanent roster of characters I've accumulated over the years. I do this with most canons, too.
If I'm making silly characters for casual sites, I tend to just provide the bar minimum, however bad that may sound. Chances are that that I'm not going to use them on another site ever again, so why try to elaborate? I just give the basics and whatever else I feel other people need to know when interacting with my characters.
I personally don't mind what type of app is provided. I don't really think it affects me too much.

It used to take me several days, up to a week or so. Now I just whip them out in like ten minutes.

it depends for me. i've done apps super quick before, and i've done apps in no less than a couple months. i get really stressed and anxious about apps so sometimes it takes me a lot longer. and because i absolutely hate writing history. i put it off as long as possible. when i finally reach that last stretch, however, i try to give it my all so i can get it done.

Mine really depends on how much grasp I got on that character at any given time. If the muse for it just suddenly popped up, it might take me several days to get the words I can clearly see within my mind to the app itself. Then, when your mind decides that it's nice to start detailing the personality to the moon and back, it gets quite hectic.
Now, if it's a muse I got the grasp and the muse is certainly been there and increasing at a very fast pace, I tend to finish the app several hours. Usually between half an hour or so. The one thing that takes me forever usually is finding a good fc, and a good one not taken.

The main issue for me on apps. Is writing backgrounds. Usually I try be vague. But people sometimes want moer. So I go "GRWAH!" and stuff. But yeah. Writing backgrounds and sometimes a good personality description gives me a headache.

See, a growing trend I've noticed the last few years is that admins don't want to read the gritty details. They don't want to know that when your little ray of sunshine was 10, they liked jelly sandwiches made by Mum anymore. So the last couple of years, I got it done in about an hour, maybe less. Sometimes I even wrote it on my phone to make sure I only wrote the important stuff... cause touchscreens are bad mm'kay?
But before it would take me probably a few hours to a day. I don't spend much time on it.

i lied
i finish apps really quickly - i really only give the bare bones of the character, they tend to stray from the apps and come into their own anyways once i actually start playing them. actually writing an app is pretty quick once i stop putting it off. most of my character creation process is just keeping the character in the back of my head for a few days and just putting them together at my leisure without actually writing anything down. then once i have a good enough idea i sit down and crank out an app in like ten minutes.

Like Sifr said, it's a trend that some admins really don't want the gritty details. However I'm not one of those admins. I want to know important details, but I don't care about your character's favorite food, but I do care if a phobia is a 'weakness' how did that phobia start, etc. If it's fundamental to your character, I want to know. As for my own apps, I can finish it in a matter of an hour or two. This is writing a detailed personality and history. Some apps however go by the way side if I know I can't finish them for a bit. Though normally, if I'm focusing strictly on that, it's an hour or two, if not, a week at most as I do a part of the profile per day.
However if it's one of those simple apps that no one cares about...then it takes me twenty minutes at the most. It actually takes me longer to find all the coding in the app.

Short apps, yeah. They are a breeze for me too. However, the coding sometimes make me confuse however. =\ Sometimes the app coding crashes on me.

I usually work on apps offline before posting them...unless it's a proboards site where I won't have to stare at a bunch of code while I write it out.
