Okay, I started thinking about how to work a certain mechanic for a thing I'm working on, but I'm honestly drawn up short when I think about how few threads I've legitimately finished in my four years roleplaying... one of the side effects of my mentality of "eh a thread ends when things have reached a point where they can't really go any further" really. So call it passing curiosity... but how many posts does it usually take, on average, before a thread is in the ballpark of being finished?
I've personally always gone only two or three pages (meaning thirty to forty-five posts) but I have no idea if this is the norm or what. Like I said. I'm curious. How long do your threads usually go for before they're considered finished?

You know, I never thought about that before, but my experience had been almost identical to yours... That kind of surprises me. I mean, what are the odds? The only difference is I've played for longer, but sadly have only finished enough to count with my hands. Finished as in all the players deemed it was over.

On my site, threads are usually completed. We had an average of 10 abandoned threads/ year, less than 50 in 5 years. We see threads as chapters of our story... and how many unfinished chapters have you seen in a story?
Ending with suspense, implying that the remaining part continued offscreen, yes, it happens rather often, unfortunately, but still brought to an end and with the link to the thread following it, when it is the case.
We had threads last 6-8 posts until finished, and the record threads of 15 pages or more. (Very few, though, these were about 4-5 a year). The average threads are of 2-4 pages, I'd say.

For me, it depends on the genre! On one site I'm on, I agree with you. 3/4 is usually the norm. This is a more casual roleplay, where we write relationships/interactions and the posts average around 300-400 words. On another site I'm on, usually threads stop around the second page. On this site, the stakes are a little bit higher and the word count averages around ~700.
To be honest, I kind of agree with you! I'm appalled at how many threads I've "finished" - there should probably be more, but either call it laziness or just life getting in the way, I haven't really felt "finished" with all that many.

I personally don't end my threads after so many posts have been made but rather time has been passed. I can only have muse for a certain situation for so long before I simply end it and post about my character leaving. A thread can last a month and only have seven posts due to the other playing being busy or just myself being busy, while other times I've had five page threads happen in two weeks just because the other player and I are on at similar times and can post rapidly and they naturally reach that end where both characters have run out of things to say and go their separate ways. I suppose I personally just don't have the patience to let things run their course and reach that point where there is nothing else to post about. Is that a flaw in my RP skills? I mean I always just thought that it was me wanting to post in other threads but not wanting to have too many loose ends but now that I think about it...
