The pod hisses, and you take in a breath of air. It's cold. A scientist walks up to you and checks your vitals, ticks some boxes on the papers in their hand, tells you to go out and get a number. You've just woken from cryostasis.
A week later, you're used to the mechanism. By entering into a state of cold sleep, you are able to access a virtual plane created by a host party. The Hydra System allows a team of four to function in the same way; they are all connected to the host but maintain independent thinking and action. Your body may be frozen and in suspended animation, but your mind is awake.
You work for Celsius Solutions, a company that specializes in cryogenics. Hired exclusively by Qun Zhong Corporation, you and your team enter different hosts to extract information from them. However, your team is frequently countered by Vicious, a manifestation of the mind.
Armed with a weapon, you and your team traverse the Plane to complete biweekly tasks assigned to you by your bosses. Extracting information is the only thing you must do; how you achieve your objectives is entirely up to the discretion of you and your team. InformationCRYSALIS is an original RP based off an idea of combat in a virtual world I stormed with another friend nearly seven years ago, but as I'm running and structuring it alone, it also draws inspiration from various films, games and genres. All the systems and concepts used here are subject to change as the RP moves and develops. The OOC thread is linked with the IC thread; achievements are unlocked depending on what you've done in the RP, and a shop system allows you to purchase upgrades that apply to the entire team. Players are encouraged to discuss amongst themselves on what to purchase, as all Crypts earned will go to a shared fund. Similarly, items found on tasks will be added to a team inventory. The team's weapons are engineered by TeD and funded by the amount of Crypts that you pump into it. Any number of team members can carry the same weapon as long as it is unlocked. Funding TeD will also unlock new items; every time a new item is unlocked, a free sample will be given to the team. CRYSALIS is a death-enabled RP. If your character dies, your slot is free game for anyone (you're free to apply again for it, but with a different character). When I first reading it, I thought it was going to be a world I wasn't going to understand. Then when you mentioned fighting monsters in the Plane...thought of Persona.
I could use some serious sci-fi. How are we able to access a host's mind though? The technicalities I mean. Just to make sure, we'll be in suspended animation so that our mind can access the virtual plane. How does the virtual plane relate to our target host?

Perhaps CRYSALIS is set in a world that isn't so simple, but that's subject to change depending on how the RP goes. I have conceptualized the world outside the labs and the Planes, but the main focus in this RP is definitely the tasks.
It may get repetitive shuttling between the labs, the TeD and the Plane, but that is set against a backdrop of you, the players, discussing on how to approach an IC situation or on the upgrades you may wish to purchase. These discussions are conducted IC, but OOC discussion is welcome as well. (Note that purchases are made in this ooc thread.)
You could say that the Vicious are to Shadows as the Plane is to the TV World, but there are dissimilarities. Fighting isn't the only way to approach a Vicious, despite their name. (Same goes for the tasks that your boss hands to you.)
Accessing the host's mind is done in a controlled environment. As a Celsius employee, you have a chipset on the back of your neck and the small of your back. You are attached to a pod via those connectors. Electromagnetic waves access the chipset and sync your wavelengths to the host to allow entry, and once that is done, the chips provide feedback to the lab technicians.
Once the wavelengths are synchronized, the combined wavelengths from all five of you will generate the Plane according to the mental environment of the host. The stronger the waves, the more stable the Plane. Strength is determined by the number of participants, and two players + a host is only barely enough to generate a Plane.
Several things affect the stability of a Plane: mental state, emotions and interaction. As you are specifically trained to handle the Plane, you can access it for longer amounts of time. The host, however, is not. They will feel discomfort as they do not have the chipset to regulate their internal system and have their mind invaded by you. In the Plane, these disruptions manifest as Vicious; in real life, it simply manifests as instability in their physical state.
Even though both parties are in a state of suspended animation, there is a difference in how it is induced. Electromagnetic waves suppress your brain activity long enough via your chipset for the cold sleep to take over, and then these waves jump-start your brain again, allowing you full activity and control over yourself in the Plane. The hosts, however, aren't so fortunate. They undergo a crude form of freezing, giving them little to no control over themselves; hence, most of their mental power goes to generating a Plane. It is also because of this contribution towards creating - as far as Celsius has found out - that leads to the manifestation of Vicious.
Planes vary in terms of design. It is very much like the world as the host recognizes it, and it is construed from their vision of social reality and inner desires. The combined wavelengths of the team merely encourages the host to generate the Plane. Consider the wavelengths a passport into the mind; you have contributed to the building somehow, and therefore, you are a stakeholder in it -- hence, you are able to access it. Once the Plane is fully constructed, it is supported solely by the host.
Excessive damage to the Plane will cause the host mental distress, hence encouraging more Vicious to appear. Do try not to destroy a Plane at all costs, even if it means not finishing the task on the first try. These tasks are biweekly, after all -- who knows, you may need the host alive in the future. Completing a task gradually may net you better results than completing it in one shot.
Please note that there is no penalty for going back to continue a task multiple times.
