what do you guys think of a site not having a cbox or any kind of instant chat? do you think it is more prone to failure for the site?

C-Boxes are your first look at the community. It's how people judge if your site would be a welcoming environment or not. C-Boxes are also used to ask those questions that really are yes or no questions.
I know a site that was around, they had a C-Box, but they never used it and instead had a giant Skype group. It made the site feel elitist, they didn't generate much traffic, etc.
If it's a private place for you and your friends, don't bother with the C-Box, but if you're opening it to the public, use their Shoutbox at the very least.

One of the first things I look for on any site is their cbox. It really does help create a community. A lot of new members will go there to ask questions, since it's a lot easier than having to post in a guest board. IMO I think a site would be more prone to failure without one.

solid. i was thinking about testing out a site without a cbox, but it may do more harm than good.

My site isn't going to have a cbox just to prove all of you wrong.

personally i don't think cboxes are a requirement, yeah they make things a little easier since everyone can hang out there but everyone can hang out on the boards too. or pm. or use a messenger if that don't work for them. and when it comes to borads/pms people just gotta learn to be patient. there's plenty of none cbox options. I think whether or not you use one depends more on your goals with the site. However, most people are used to seeing a cbox nowadays //shrug

I wanted to do away with mine too but every time I ask this question on resource forums, the response is almost always overwhelmingly in favor of boxes... :/ I am ditching cbox though. Cheap as the premium is, I'm sick of throwing money away on the box when SMF has a box option. Maybe not as elegant but meh. Works.

I guess my opinion varies on it as I feel like a cbox can make or break a site depending on the members themselves. I've been to some sites where the box was great, very open and then I've been to others where not being included or known in the box meant that they didn't even bother to glance at your character to roleplay with. Some sites and their members really only rp with the people that they know in the box, which can make those who don't like using the box often, feel excluded on the site.
If you're going with a box, make sure your members are fully aware to welcome everyone and anyone - even if the conversation is going fast make it a point to instantly and always say hello, how are you, any questions? It goes a long way.

It goes a long way. Can I say this times infinity, it is an immediate turn-off on a site when I get ignored in the cbox. It could be the perfect site, and if I'm ignored, I will reach and close that tab and move on.
But uh okay I am a hugggeeeee supporter of cboxes. I like open cboxes, and for me, I hate it when the staff get really uptight about them. Big time. I don't even really glance at a site without a cbox. I don't know, maybe it's because to me, when a site has a cbox, it means it's not just a site for roleplay and that's it. There's a community there with people who have hopes and dreams. And you can touch those people and know what makes them happy and what makes them sad. And that's huge for me. I want to know who I'm RPing with before I RP with them.
IT'S NOT ABOUT THE JOURNEY IT'S ABOUT THE PEOPLE YOU MEET ALONG THE WAY
Or I'm a dork who just really dislikes plotting other than on the fly or in a situation where it's so loose that anyone can toss in ideas almost immediately and change the whole outlook. There's options.

People never reveal their true selves in the cbox. I am more fond of old-school rping where you learn about each other by talking about rp and then brushing into other subjects along the way. Things written this way are more well thought-off and what I like about this the most - and, in its opposite, what I dislike about the cbox - is the slow and satisfying gratification. In the cbox, as what Kuroya said, people want to be acknowledged when they're there. Consequently, people who know people want to be acknowledged have to acknowledge other people.
I've been through both worlds. All I can say is, while the cbox has been very fun in my first experiences, it's very tiring, addicting, and time-consuming that it does disrupt my work. For me, being able to interact in a more slow but meaningful process is better. If I had to make an analogy, it's being able to love a person all throughout your life than be consumed by temporary passion. Love gradually.
I also think it is less discriminating. I know a friend who's just too shy to get into cboxes. It's very isolating when you really don't want to join the cbox but want to continue interacting with the community via the forums. And there's this constant notion of inviting others to join the cbox to become part of the community, which, I think, is contradicting, because the bulk and the very centre of activity of the site is in the forum where people plot, rp, and chat. The discrimination or segregation manifests when people label active rpers but are absent in the cbox as lurkers or something along the lines of "who's that?" because people never met them in the cbox even when the recent posts have been choking full of their contributions.
I blame the cbox for making some people lazy and making the site look even worse. Active cbox, but few posts?
I want a quiet community where people don't have to constantly be told of "oh, I'm like this and that" but a place where people accept each other. People are more than capable of noticing things without being told flat-out. I find it really tiring to have to constantly talk and share. Extroverts will experience it differently. So I guess that's why.
