I guess this is as good a place as ever to ask a question that pops into my mind once in a while.
You know those times where you look through your character library on a site, and you see a character that just isn't for you anymore because of some reason or another, so what are those circumstances? What are the reasons that you would drop a character?
Me personally, when a big amount of dead threads overwhelm the amount of active and/or completed threads, that's when I think, "yanno maybe this character isn't all I thought it was going to be, so I'm going to get rid of it in favor of another." I don't know if this is a good reason for doing it, but to me I just believe the amount of dead threads corresponds with how much people like my babus.
Anyways, thoughts? Opinions? Concerns? XD

There's more than a few reasons why I'll drop. Usually it's due to lack of muse coinciding with lack of plots since I tend to make a lot of characters so when I drop them, I can dedicate time to others who do have muse or plots (but preferably both). Another similar reason will be if I lose a romance plot since most of my characters don't tend to fall in love again or take so long to recover that I don't like watching them go through it ICly. They love too passionately and it makes me sad when they go through breakups.
I guess the last reason I drop is because of drama associated with that character. Sometimes that drama will relate to the reasons above. Sometimes it won't. But if I'm having drama and problems with that character, especially if it's due to OOC reasons, I tend to drop the character like a hot potato.

I tend to drop the characters that aren't needed for the site plot to progress. So many people make so similar characters, very few actually fill some niches that are required for those characters to co-exist. So, if I find that my character is so similar to another that there's no redemption, I tend to drop them. Also, if I can't find a place to throw them into the site plot, I drop them. Otherwise, once I get the ball rolling, I stick with them. Wise Cracker if I threw away characters everytime my dead threads outnumbered my live threads, I would be playing nothing but Fumio. lol. He's my little lucky guy.

Due to being physically disabled, I have had to cast aside characters because they were simply unfeasible to keep up with offline. Other times, I either lost interest as my desires changed; alternatively, I had bitter estrangements which made certain figures' "muses" disappear. The first and last occurred most these past divers years, sad as that is.

i could personally drop a character for any reason at any time, but most of the time it is because i don't have a connection with them anymore, or i never did in the first place. sometimes i "make a quick character" to jump right into an rp to rp with friends, but then when i use that character to rp with others my interest in them or connection rather is gone because there is no real depth to them. they are built off of hype. not sure if there is a right or wrong reason to throw away a character, despite what everyone things, it is you who has to rp. i really don't like rps that limit revamps/revisions to characters because of the way i am when it comes to this sort of thing.

I do kill characters or send them away, out of the story, when they have met their role in the story and there isn't anything more for them. Also when their death or disappearance can determine more plot twists for the others, ie when the story benefits of this as a whole.

wow reading this makes me feel weird - I never ever give on a character.
I tend to neglect some because they're not getting attention or just not reuse the concept because of former associations or what not, so I guess that's when I 'drop' a character from my recycle. I tend to make new characters all the time though so I don't even know what to do with myself anymore at times.
But if I dropped a character it would probably be due to a site's activity restrictions or generally there's too much in them for me to just pick them up and go somewhere new. The last time I dropped characters is because I had no muse for any of them, because nobody showed any interest in them at all.
I tend to drop sites that do that more then just characters tho.

the only time i have truly dropped a character (the other times the site has died or closed or i fell inactive) was when i had this really elaborate plot with tuna, then i got super busy with my senior year of hs and the intention was to go back to the plot when things calmed down (aka summer), but her character had plotted and fleshed out so much that i had fallen behind, didn't know anything that happened, and the people on the site were totally different, so i dropped that plot and made a new one, essentially. but yeh, i don't really 'drop' characters, but end up holding on for dear life until it's just not possible to play them anymore lmao

Usually it's because I'm just not feeling the character anymore. I also have this tendency to make characters on a whim bc I like a certain idea/FC and then I realise that I actually don't like playing them at all. Luckily, I usually realise this before they get thrown into a lot of plots.

Ugh, I hate having to drop characters but I've done it for various reasons. Maybe I lost complete interest in developing them or the person I had a major plot with vanished and I had no desire to restart everything or I just plain wanted to stab myself in the face while writing the character.

HA
DROP A CHARACTER
I haven't done this in AGES. And it's nearly always only because the site the character was on died. And even then- I'm about to revive two characters from a site that just closed so that in the past.... god nearly two full years now I haven't deleted more than ONE character. Every other character has been reused. Before then I had a whole host of characters from back when I played Warrior Cats that aren't likely to be revive anytime soon... (Though two are making minor semi-come backs actually.)
I get REALLY attached to characters, okay. I have 50 in rotation and each one is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.

jk i've dropped characters before but it's usually only when they lose all their plots and my fragile heart is too broken to keep writing them. otherwise i don't know how to let go

Usually I will drop a character if I'm having issues with establishing plots for them to carry out or if I've lost a sense of direction for them. I almost dropped one character because the main person her story line was going to be supplemented by vanished.
I was about to quit her when I noticed people joking about a potential plot for the site in the cbox. It suited her and immediately I jumped on it, and from that plot alone it made me reimagine the character in a new light and she became one of my favorite characters of all time.
P.S. One time I lost muse for a character and offered her up to be killed for someone's plot, so there's always that. It was a fun plot too and one of the few times I didn't mind killing a character.

I won't lie and said that I have never dropped a character before, I've dropped a few scattered around through my 5 or 6 years of RPing. Usually its because I lost muse for that character, or I've made that character and she/he just sits there all lonely. Sites that I am on only usually range from letting you have 3-5 characters but you need a certain amount of post to get that character, so sometimes if I see a new canon or custom character added that I like, instead of waiting I might drop a character I already have, but that is rare. Recently with graduating high school and now heading to college I've dropped a few characters due to time. But I am rarely a person to drop characters.

Gotta say, i pretty much don't drop characters unless the RP dies. I'll let the muse wax and wane, but I rarely ever actually delete a character. It makes me feel sad doing so ]:
