I've never tried roleplaying on tumblr before, but I've seen it done. It looks like a lot of fun! I'd be interested in learning more about it as well.

I haven't, but a few of the people I follow do pretty actively. It looks pretty simple: make a blog, set up a profile, app somewhere, then play? I've read that gif collections are needed (for rl fcs especially?), but I've actually never seen them used on the few rp logs I've read.
Anyway, a couple links that might help:

ahaha, we can be tumblr rp'ing newbs together jin! dfksla;fjdsa, katya, you are like my lifesaver.
so, i read through everything posted that came with 'dem links. and i gotta say ..... it feels like what they're writing is VERY real life fc orientated, BUT ANYWAY. i'm still wondering, how would anime face claims work? i'm surfing tumblr atm lookin' for an answer, BUT I FIGURED, that someone would have an answer here.
herp.
i get the feeling that the tumblr rp world is a lot more lax than most rp sites about face claims and the possibility of two chars meeting each other and have the same face claim.

Alright, let's see if I can give you good tips. I'm relatively new to tumblr roleplay myself, but it is fairly easy to do. In theory, at least.
GROUP VS. INDEPENDENT There's two types of roleplay. Independent and group.
Group is like forums. You go through an application process, and all that jazz. Some groups have pre-made characters, some groups let you make your own. I don't really know much about that part of tumblr roleplay aside from that.
Then there's the independent roleplayers. That's where you set up your page, and do whatever the fluck you want.
FACE CLAIMS To answer your question about face claims, for groups I've mostly seen that they're very real life oriented.
With independent, you can do whatever you want, as I've said before. Though, with independent blogs, it's basically got a divide where the animanga guys roleplay with each other, and the real life's roleplay with each other.
CANON VS. ORIGINAL This is where you might hit a bit of a road bump. While Tumblr roleplay is a rather lax roleplay method, it's not to be entered lightly.
With canon characters, and original characters it's the opposite of forums. While forums are mostly original character oriented, Tumblr leans towards the canon characters, from what I see.
If you plan on going with an original character, as an independent blog, expect to be ignored by some people.
If you do want to be successful as an independent character, be as detailed as possible. Don't just throw up a basic profile with likes, dislikes, appearance and crap like that. You have to sell your character the people you hope to roleplay with. You have to make them believe that your character is worth the effort, and that they aren't just a half-assed mary-sue.
GIF COLLECTION I saw a previous post mention this. While gif collections are widely popular, and a good way to add some visualization to your replies, they are by no means necessary, and I personally never use them. Real life face claim or not.
FANDOMS Independent roleplays are very fandom oriented. You'll more than likely see the Avengers/Marvel guys roleplaying with other Avengers/Marvel guys. The Sherlock guys roleplay with the Sherlock guys.
If you see that a blog as a variation of 'open fandom', 'pan-fandom', 'multi-fandom' it means that they're open to roleplaying with anyone, so don't be afraid to ask them for roleplay, even if you aren't specifically for that fandom.
EXAMPLES This is an example of an OC that I never planned on using.
This is an OC that I follow.
I don't really know any animanga OC's, because I'm mostly in the Avengers/Marvel/DC fandom, and that has a relatively real life focus, though some do use the comic versions.
END NOTES I think that covers most things. If you have any other questions, I'll happily answer them to the best of my abilities.
