everyone's favorite pen. I am terribly bored so I just thought ... why not make a tutorial! WHY? Because I'm gross. That's why. I thought about it for weeks and here I am back to where I was. I had taken this photography class thinking "Yes teach me photography" when it was actually an introduction to Photoshop. Practically the only piece of knowledge I didn't know already was the pen tool. Which is actually probably one of the most difficult and frustrating piece out there in Photoshop if you do not know what you are doing. Some to most artists use it to outline their work. It is really good if you know how to use it. My professor taught me a trick and honestly I don't even look back at the selection or wand and lasso tools anymore now since I know how to use the pen. I am going to assume no one knows how to use the pen and if you do, coolio! But I know there are others who do not know so this is for those people! I'm gonna be showing you two images. This isn't how skilled you are, but just to show the difference of how much clutter there is in the image. Images below. I will not be working on all of them, just the first. I am going to really show you piece by piece how to use the pen. Rather than grabbing the lasso tools and trying to redo over the line every single time or even how selection or wand grabs the background when you really don't want it to and you just want the character in the image. I learned on a mac computer, but on windows its pretty much the same. I will also be showing you the tricks I learned and its honestly really helpful and that is what this tutorial is here for. If you have any questions, you can ask me I don't mind! I don't really know if I will be good at explaining. That's my only warning. So we will be using the animal crossing picture. The animal crossing is so simple and usually it is because it has a really plain background. So you open Photoshop and for those who do not remember the pen tool is; it's at the bottom near your text just pick the one that says pen tool. Don't worry about the others because alas I do not know how to work the others. Okay so you see this: At the top? Do you notice how the box is around the pen tool? Click that. The first box makes shapes and you will find yourself making shapes! The one with the box around the pen tool is what you want. We will be starting with the first image as stated above. For those who do not remember it is this image. Okay so you were taught either this way. Small dots and there are so many dots and you are like why? and you can't even get to the right angle it's just straight. Notice the arm how the line goes through it and the ears are like a child found your way on your computer and messed up your entire process. Then you were taught how to do this: You know the pull your mouse to where it makes a curve? But then some of lines just don't want to listen. It's a bit frustrating because you keep pulling your mouse right and left. It's just no. You close photoshop and you are done and go back to writing/modding/coding/complaining. But no more frustration for you! So you see that little circle? I want you to press alt and move your mouse down to the tip of the ear. For macs it should be cmd+alt if it isn't that because my memory is bad then try alt only. So you got that? Now, you want to click a little bit down the middle of the ear and drag your mouse downwards. And honestly that is really it. That's it. You do that every single time you hit a little curve. Once you got to this: *note the red is just so you can see the lines You right-click on your mouse and choose one of the following make selection, fill path, stroke path. Above I had chosen stroke path but you want the image to be cut out right? So you will choose make selection and click okay unless you want to change the settings (do not recommend). Should look like this: Then you can either Marquee Tool and go to refine edge. Just to fix the minor bugs. Grab your move tool or ctrl+c. And you get this! That's it! If you have any questions, message me? I can try to help, but as I said before I don't really know if I will be good at explaining. tutorial brought you by foxxu. |
