I really did want to start this 5 days before the actual thing but mmmmmmmmmmm im too impatient/paranoid that I'll forget/get beaten to the punch. So I'm doing the writing contest from hell nanowrimo for the third time this year, and I know that a lot of people are too. That being said, what are those senior nano's thoughts on what this is about? Anything specific in mind? What's the hardest thing to do about writing a novel personally I hate coming up with char names ./flips everything? And for those newer members, what motivated you to try NanoWrimo? Are you planning to plan ahead or just wing it like me? Moar importantly, R U EXCITED? cause i am. /shamelessly puts link here

Writing the Pokemon fic I've been planning since I was ten for a long while. It's not going to be a brand new plot and I have most of the stuffs planned down already. I'll give NaNoWriMo a shot with it. So I'm kind of cheating a teensy-weensy bit but I like planning ahead too much. I won't settle down for impromptu ideas.
I've never done NaNoWrimo before xD I was going to last year but only made it with one half of chapter 1. It was great though, but still lol.

Best advice I can give you: Plan ahead. Not necessarily in great detail, but at least have a general outline with beginning, middle, and end, yeah? I know a lot of people just rely on muse/red bull to write write write write until they hit a bajillion words, but you can't really bank on inspiration to keep chugging you along that far. If you hit a roadblock in the story and have no idea what happens next, you're basically fucked. From everyone I've talked to, short of RL, getting stuck with the story is the main reason people give up on NaNo when they otherwise have all the time/talent/etc to have won.
Otherwise, my pet peeve is when people write crap just to up their word count, stuff like introducing extraneous characters, rambling forever with exposition, etc etc. I get that NaNo is a rough draft, but to me that means you should at least be trying to write stuff that'd survive a final draft. I know a lot of people are just doing NaNo to see if they can, but to me, losing with 30k words of decent story would make me a lot happier than winning with 40k words of bullshit. I just don't see how winning could be satisfying if you look back and think what the hell did I just write?

I beat my first year and into the 75,000 area (past the required 50k) by planning ahead, so it's generally a good idea to have at least a vague outline beforehand. For the two years after that, same thing. But last year I bombed big time when I tried to do the "seat of the pants" method. So I'm definitely going in with a plan this time...
