Angel actually told me this a couple of months ago but I looked it up just now when Balendin told me how MSN kept insisting him to go to skype. www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/windows-live-messenger-skype-microsoft-98512Windows Live Messenger To Be Retired In Favour of Skype
Users are invited to merge accounts with Skype before shutdown in Q1 2013 On November 7, 2012 by Steve McCaskill 0
Microsoft has confirmed that it will be shutting down Windows Live Messenger next year as the company focuses its attentions on Skype.
Support for the instant messaging client will end in all countries except for China in the first quarter of 2013, but users will be able to access their contacts in Skype. From version 6.0 of the VoIP client, it is possible to log in using a Microsoft account, while users of both services will be able to merge their accounts together.
Microsoft, which acquired Skype in a £5.4 billion takeover last year, says that Skype provides better support for all platforms, improved instant messaging, landline and video calling as well as the ability to call Facebook friends. No offense but msn sucks anyway. At least when they went "windows live" anyway. It was pretty cool back then.

MSN is the only way I communicate with people and I hate Skype. This is going to suck balls for me. Sure, it's buggy and slow and a pain in the ass, but it's an IM that works that connects me to the people I want it to and I'm complaining because I don't want to find a new one 8'C

I use skype a lot for group conferences but my contacts are usually in msn or aim, which I put together in pidgin so I don't have to put through with msn. Google chat is a good alternative though? I honestly never thought of what messenger I use to keep in contact with people. Pidgin does wonders and I'm not sure how it would handle msn shutting down. Would be cool if I can still keep my contacts from there.
AIM has lost its popularity...didn't realize this sudden shortage of decent messengers.

see i like to try and separate my personal and online life, and i'm super lazy and don't want to mess with logging in and out of google accounts x: i have enough trouble with my uni outlook inbox and my regular msn one herp. I've never heard of Pidgin before, but I have used IMO.im for an online messenger. I was super sad when meebo closed even though I think it caused a lot of spam. hopefully there'll be some kind of alternative to skype that pops up D8 i really don't like video chats and once people know you have a skype that's all they want to do.

I don't like skype, mostly because it always forces me to give it the 'force quit' option. The only thing I have is MSN and c-boxes; otherwise, it's hopeless trying to contact me XD it's even worse when I'm going back to China to visit my relatives - because no IMs work there except for those chinese ones. My high school friends told me to keep in touch with an ichat account - but I didn't |D just didn't feel the need to. /lazy. Don't know how I'm going to deal with MSN closing.

how exactly will you be able to merge messenger and skype accounts? i do like the latter more, but the vast majority of my contacts are on the former and it'll be a pain trying to transfer shit over. still sucks, regardless.
@konya: actually most of the online friends on my skype just use it for the messaging purposes. not sure if anyone else is like that, but i don't exactly like my face/voice showing up to people i don't fully know... ;3;

Finally. It's about time. Using two messengers has been such a hassle.
They probably won't 'merge' with a pre-existing account. you'll probably just have two separate skype accounts and it will be a hassle to keep them both because you can't use them both at once.
As for people who can't get skype working on their computer, there's always IMO, so you can sign in on your browser and you won't ever have to install it.

Same here, though I'm not that shy showing my face. Those asking to see my face / hear my voice tend to regret it later.
