JEGUS CHRIST, we all know how terrible fanfiction.net is, but we also know how wonderful the good fanfiction is. so i've got a few questions gais.
if your main source of fanfic is in fact fanfiction.net, how do you go about surfing? do you just pick a series and hope that you find something good on the front page? do you have a specific tag you surf? certain filters you put through? or is it all 'cross my fingers and hope for the best'?
if you're main source of fanfic isn't fanfiction.net, where do you look for your daily fill of shippy goodness and possible character angst?
do you prefer to read fanfic? or do you prefer to write it?
smut? fluff? angst? crack? canon x oc? canon x canon? crossovers? complete orignal characters in the setting of a series? round robins? slash? femslash? het? long fanfics? short ones? drabbles? flash fics (idk what that is even)? ficlets? series? one-shots? PWP? the less PG-13 version of PWP?
what kind of fanfic do you enjoy?

haha, i used to hang around ffnet for a while, like, for a year about three years ago. in the beginning, i was just there for the canon x oc romances, but then i met momo there, who later brought me over to the rp forums. i met owari there too, and i have a crew of friends from that side of the net on my messenger. ( so i like it for making writer friends too? ;w; )
i've written so much fanfic and i've read so much man. crack is the best. i swear to god. its the funnest part of writing there. just stuff like my immortal can have you in tears, and honestly i learned a lot about what to avoid when writing? satires. when you write in fandom, it really helps. there's a lot of sue-bashing among the crowds i've met at ffnet, and the writers i've met there are SUPER afraid of writing sues... at least, the decent, self-conscious ones i've met. it's a whole other culture man, with flamers and spazzers leaving comments.
augh, lunascence has amazing fanfics, and so does livejournal. lunascence, your most likely to find reader x canon (and so much decent het smut in their collections ♥ ) lj leans canon x canon yaoi, and ffnet is one of the few places over-ridden with OCs among the yaoi. (luna and lj have anti-OC vibes, tbh). i really enjoy fics with an artist vibe. pairing doesn't matter. if something has sexy writing, and sheds a new light on the fandom for me, then its cool. i have a lot of authors there as role models.
i'm a huge khr groupie. my ships are hibarixryohei and mukuroxcrhome. BUT I really like those short oneshot fanfics that have more serious notes, and just have admirable writing styles. mukuroxchrome fics can be really mystical and spiritual because of all the possession. hibari and ryohei just have the best bromance |D
honestly? i prefer writing fanfics over reading them. some can be, just, like 800 words and its fun to get into characters you admire, to break them down in your head and figure out their intricacies... and then you appreciate your fandom even more.
(flashfics are super fast short stories, but not as strict with word count as drabbles. they're usually not more than 500 words.)
uhhh, im not sure if i read fanfiction by genre or type anymore. usually, i'll check anything out that looks well-written and the canon haven't become overly fanonized because so little is good on ffnet these days tbh :c

There's a LESS PG-13 version of PWP? Wha--how? ...Do I even want to know?I only ever use ao3 now. If I have a really small fandom (or a really old one), I might check ffnet, but I haven't done that in ages. More likely, I'll check old LJ comms if a fandom's really ancient or long-standing, like star trek or hetalia. Imo, LJ used to be the central fandom hub, and every quality ffnet writer had an LJ that they posted to anyway. Except LJ's kinda rolled over and died to make room for ao3 and tumblr. Ao3's finally added a function to sort by kudos, which is a really great way to find the most popular and hopefully quality fics when you're new to a fandom. Honestly though, if I have a new ship, these days I just gush about it with friends, or I'll read a few fics and lose interest. I do read homestuck fics kinda regularly, and I just get links from tumblr reccs, plus the steady feed from authors I've bookmarked/favorited. @elec - As far as I know, pretty much everywhere is anti-OC outside of rp. OC fics are just too often Mary-Sue fics.

Lunascence is like AO3, katya, as in, everything submitted there gets proofread. they only let your stuff go up if its perfect, grammatically, and follows the rules for not being chatspeak. somehow, this fic comm is close-knit enough to do otms. its kind of amazing, but they're probably as built up as the animanga rp comm and its a small world.
I dont' know any fanfic on tumblr, but a lot of people left lj for dreamwidth when they changed comments pages.
@ katya, nah, ffnet is the most accepting of OC fics. like, at least people read them there and they can have small backings (though not the majority). some fandoms can get all OC x canon, especially when you leave animanga fandoms and check out, like, Newsies fandom okay, imagine inazuma 11, but they're all gangsta wwI erra newsboys with territories based on nyc boroughs just-- or batman.

JESUS I CAN'T KEEP UP JEGUS.
katya:
... porn without plot gurl, porn without plot. //over-exposed to sexual content nbd.
a lot of tumblr users write on AO3, i'm not a fan of the layout, but it seems pretty legit. tbh; i didn't even know lj even HAD writers. i just use it for collecting icons. :$ doesn't help i have no idea how to work it. all i know about LJ is that most people went from that to DW, that's my knowledge of it.
Pool Boy the only reason i stick around ff.net is the occasional updates from my favourite authors in the PoT section and The Outsiders sections. both of which have some amazing crack writers and slice of life writers. tbh; i've never read my immortal. i just, can't get past the first two chapters. i love crack, but - my jegus christ - i can't take that it's just so, usdlafkj;akdsaj.
sues are everywhere, EVERYWHERE. it's almost scary, it's plausible that people are afraid of making one. esp. with all the critiques out there these days.
yessss, lunaesence - which i discovered only recently, i'm late to the partay - completely gives off the anti-oc vibe. heck, i don't even touch the oc stories when i see them. i'm a huge reader x canon reader these days, but i still only really write oc x canon. those stories never see the light of day though :$
@both yo, have you guys read the stuff of freedom of speech? i'm pretty sure it's like lunaescence, in the sense there's a lot of reader x canon, but it's not as populated as luna or AO3.
oh, and idk if you'll attack me like a lot of other people do, but have you read the fanfiction on quizilla? if you know the right writers, you can find pretty good fanfiction. lots of reader x canon, but there is canon x canon every so often.
also: is it just me or is there a lot of reader x canon outside of ff.net? i didn't even know reader x canon existed until AFTER i started exploring outside of ff.net
also also, i find the downside of travelling outside of ff.net only the REALLY big fandoms get a lot of stuff. like on lunaescence (i can't speak for AO3 since i've never read there) there isn't as much of the semi-lesser known fandoms. durarara!!, prince of tennis, inazuma eleven, ect., ect. though, i guess since there is a lack of A LOT of fanfiction is makes sense?

okay, just, first of all, the best drrr fandom writer. i love this chick's writing style. (drrr actually has a lot made for it, most being shizaya) yeah, i want to go look and see how my fandom's changed lol. i haven't visited in a while, though, i was beta reading again last month. lunascence was an amazing discovery!! i loved the whole second pov, and that entire type of writing is kind of shunned on ffn. also, luna lets you do drabble challenges, plotless stuff. now, ffnet has these rules, it was recent, where your story must have a plot and can't be anything aimlessly poetic, which is lame :/ I've heard of FoS. I kind of passed over it because I just couldn't find much material there like you said. I've also heard of quizilla. I head that three years ago, it had the worst of fanfiction. like, cutter and pregnant mary-sues and stuff. the stuff my immortal makes fun of. like, on a whole other level than ffnet, and especially when twilight happened.

katya: ... porn without plot gurl, porn without plot. //over-exposed to sexual content nbd. yeah but what is the less pg-13 version of it? would it get me arrested? The thing about LJ is that it's been dying as a fandom hub for a long time now. There are good articles on its decline (that one doesn't blame the LJ propensity for dramallama enough imo), but it's basically a damned shame. LJ comms were a great place for people to hang out and talk. Most kinkmemes--which aren't necessary all smutty, there's a lot of fluff or even really cool reqs and fills--have moved to dreamwidth. For me, I kinda have to stick to AO3. I have two fandoms that I'll regularly return to for fic: homestuck and marvel comics. A lot of smaller fanfic collectives, like Luna, don't even differentiate between marvel comic canon and marvel movie canon (I don't blame them, there aren't enough comic fics to really bother), so that's really a no go for me. ...There's fanfiction on quizilla? You could probably find DRRR and Prince of Tennis fics on LJ if you can search up their respective communities (if they have a fandom fanfic specific comm, or even a pairing specific comm, you're in luck). For Inazuma 11, I think it's just not very popular here. I've had the best luck there with the LJ comm, and also this LJ that for some reason doesn't post in the main comm.

yeah but what is the less pg-13 version of it? would it get me arrested?
nah, doubt it would get you arrested. the less pg-13 friendly version of pwp would be explicit porn written in detail y'know. like in REAL detail that is either very well written, or just drags on for several chapters. the kinda stuff you'd read of adult ff.net i guess? nothing completely horrible, but just stuff most people wouldn't want thirteen (and younger) year olds to be reading.
yeahhhhh, i skimmed the first bit of the article, i'll probably get around to reading it fully a bit later. but sounds preety legit, i never got why people left LJ, it seemed like a pretty cool site. but i guess now i can see why people would want to leave.
now that i know there's ff on LJ, i'll probably take your advice and search it up. or maybe not, since i'm lazy. we'll see.
i discovered second PoV before lunaescence actually! i kinda fell in love with the way of writing though. i found quizilla before i even touched lunaescence, and when i found lunaescence, jegus i was higher than high. i fell back into love with ff and the rest is pretty much history xD
but yeah, trust me. as a writer from that time and a writer from now, the difference between writing in general on quizilla has gotten semi-better. before, writing was all mary-sues and extremely angsty, over-used plots. everyone wanted to be famous on quizilla, so everyone just copied each other whenever a REALLY popular plot came up.
lots of teenage pregnancy, cutting, abusive parents, arranged marriages, vampires vs. were-wolves, falling in love with your kidnapper sort of thing going on there.
tbh; fanfiction wasn't all that big from what i'd seen way back when, but it's definitely gotten better since then!
