so i haven't started a site in a very long time, blah blah blah v5 is a giant pain SO i'm starting to consider hosting my site on jcink. is this a big turn off to people, or does it not really matter as long as it's got the content/is aesthetically pleasing? (also, in the way that v5 is going the coding for posts will virtually be the same but with < instead of [)
yeah idk this is a lil pointless

Okay, I'm not even going to lie. V5 has seriously grown on me. It's a buggy PoS, but what features that are working are so good that I don't care. I'm running a site on v5 atm, and we ALL whine a lot about it, but between saving drafts, being able to tag people, the participated button, faster loading times, I don't think anyone'd rather we were on v4. PBSupport is also really excellent about helping out with v5 bugs, although (understandably/forgiveably) the user-made plug-ins don't really have customer service at all. /been using a buggy money mod site opening.
As for host, it really doesn't matter to me. I prefer v5 over v4 now, but I understand most skinners haven't figured out how to code for it yet. I basically like jcink fine, certainly over IF, but I've noted that it seems to crash a lot.

Jcink is nothing to gripe about at all. There are some cool features, like linking accounts (so you never have to log out) and I know Paddy said something about just having to upload skins instead of go to like 3000000 different places to change codes (but I'd suggest asking her about that cuz I have no clue.)
There is also a code you can include that allows style tags; its not like the newclass tags but there's dohtml for that and you can do so many cool things with dohtml that you can't do with enhanced UBBC.

Yea, honestly, I dig v5. I just did the bare minimum on coding on v4 and took an RP hiatus until a few months ago, so I missed all the development of the cool codes people have now. Which makes all things CSS related nearly impossible for me. I've been trying to look into mentor programs for skinning v5 but there's not really anything up and running now, nor anyone to make codes for it so AHHHHH indecision.
I'm a fan of jcink mostly or it's mini-profiles. But that's also the appeal of v5 - all I want is audio players in mini profiles. I'll sell my soul for them.

i don't mind either. what tips the scales for me with v5 is loading time - it just loads faster. sites that load slowly, whether caused by a the host server or a complicated skin, are just a put off. but i've really dug my fair share of jcink sites, and if the site is well-made and the group of people there are chill, it will be successful. some hosts have subtle differences in their features, but i don't think those differences make or break a site's success.

i don't like v5 because their ads are really intrusive. (also because i'm horrible at skinning for it.)

I hate v5 with a fiery passion, and not just because the skinning is a pain - the ads are very very intrusive (and freaking stupid, I don't want to know 'stories from around the web', especially when one of them recently was 'five ways you have cancer'), the support staff have a tendency to be rude, for me it's very non-intuitive and it just seems too much effort for what it's worth. Proboards also has the strictest of the TOS; there is no way to move or gain access to forum databases, and even with what they're touting about v5 capabilities to transfer databases, it's a user's personal database and not the forum itself from what I can understand.
I love Jcink, there are things that piss me off about it but the support are amazing and constantly working on member-suggested add-ons and content. Remember the account switcher? Well Phbb has a system where you don't have to even log out or switch accounts to post as a different name. Jcink has been working on a similar system and I hear it's going to be great.
As for the loading issues - yeah, they were a pain, but honestly there's been nothing wrong for about three months now since they changed DDOS protection providers. Jcink as an admin is a great person and even though it was a bit creepy I was offered six months free premium just for being mildly upset by the loading time. His co-admin is also an avid roleplayer, so woo a voice for us!
For me a forum host is more than just the software, I like to feel comfortable with the staff and Jcink honestly blows proboards out of the water in that aspect imo.
For other hosts, recently Icyboards has been making a splash - it uses MyBB which is also from my understanding one of the popular self-hosting softwares? The admin is incredibly nice and will work with individual members to convert their forums, skins and databases, and add in user-suggested plug-ins to the forum software itself. Just an alternative!

I have adblocker, the stories from around the web aren't considered ads by it so i have to manually blacklist them which is something I don't want to do.

i had a whole reply but then proboards crashed and ate it! woo downtime!
basically they're there, i just checked on katya's site, cancer list and all, i use adblock for chrome, the one with the red hand. the idea of the stories from around the web, NON-tailored to the audience and also involving trackers and other things leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and this is one of my personal reasons for disliking v5. it's great that other people don't seem to have an issue but it's one of those little things that adds up to a dealbreaker for me.

Just throwing in my two cents - I have ad blocker plus for Chrome and when I looked at a site it said "please consider unblocking ads to support this site" and the "stories from around the web." if i remember correctly the stories from around the web were on the bottom of a post, not the main page, but i could be delusional. its quite possible.

I'm not that picky with forum hosts unless I'm the site owner. V5 has been the inevitable so I really had no choice but to be open-minded about it. As GS staff, I thought I should be at least encouraging or neutral about the idea but if I were to be personally asked, I kind of hate v5 a lot too and Konya nailed everything. It's given me nothing but pain. The notifications are really the only thing I would want to trade it for for another forum host.
