My unpopular choice is SMF. I will never go back. Jcink's account switcher is nice but it's got nothing on SMF's sub-accounts (which you can literally sit in one single account and post all your characters from it and if you do somehow mess up posting as a different character, all you have to do is edit the post and choose the right character from a drop-down.) I had a friend constantly rebuff my raving lunatic fangirling over SMF for over a year. This month, she turned to SMF in desperation because the previous software she swore by just wouldn't install. Now she's kicking herself for snubbing SMF before. Haha! They have free hosted versions of SMF (two that I can think of) but they're not as good as self-hosting...
Of the popular free hosts, I really liked Jcink for a while but IcyBoards is looking a lot better from what I've seen.

I have adblocker, the stories from around the web aren't considered ads by it so i have to manually blacklist them which is something I don't want to do. i know how to get rid of that. if you're talking about that related topics shit at the bottom of a post, just put this in global headers <style> .gravity-related-topics { display:none; } </style> and if pb has a problem with it, tell them to get off their asses and make that unnecessary eye-sore optional. or at least movable/collapsible. :/ speaking of fixes for ads, if you use <div style="font-size:0px;">$[header]</div> for your header, it'll make that msg for the people who DO have adblock disappear while still keeping the image for people who don't have adblock visible. not sure if that breaks tos though :I

I guess I'm a odd one out then. I quite like V5. The skinning is a bit complicated here and there- but asking questions and just tinkering with it till you're about to pull your hair out has helped me learn quite a bit about it. I really don't see all the issues a lot of people bring up. Yeah, it's buggy, but it's gone quite a bit far since Open Beta. The codes/plugins are brand new and the coders are learning the same amount of things that we are- so yes everything is new, and yes there are bugs. I will agree on the Gravity ads- completely. That's something I reallllly dislike with a flaming passion- but I've just learned to ignore it.
I like the account switcher as well, and how I can just switch forums I'm registered on with a few mouse clicks. I do agree it can be a bit buggy but I actually figured it out V5 way easier and earlier than Jcink for some odd reason. Jcink is nice, and I heard IcyBoards is really nice as well- but I quite like V5. The table issues with the style tags and the like was because they originals were a 'cheat code' for the whole system. Now that it's added in, I think it's quite easy to work with. We even apparently have the newclasses and the like and people are working to make that easier as well.
Yes it does take some work, but what doesn't? V5 has it's pros and cons just like Jcink and others. As for host preference, I think it should be on whatever someone actually likes. If that's Jcink? Host on Jcink. If that's V5? Host on V5. It should be on what you like to work with, and we can all disagree or agree on what we like and what we don't. I just think you should go with what you like to be honest.

I was told I couldn't even add a border to the advertisement box to make it look nicer - anything that touches the ads breaks TOS.

As a member I personally like a lot of the new features of v5 proboards, it flows quite nicely even if the codes are annoying. I hated it at first but it has grown on me like a slug with a mustache, I now get frustrated when I'm on v4 and some of my favourite bits are missing.
Jcink I can deal with too as it has its own positives! But Invisionfree.....lets not go there...

A lot of people i've met don't particularly like invisionfree, I think it's mostly aesthetics, Invisionfree generally has worse skins plus is has the massive invisionfree ad in the middle of the site which sticks out like a sore thumb.

i also tend to associate invisionfree with all those awful real life fc boarding school/small town/beach rps, fairly or not, so it turns me off when stuff is hosted there.
but yeah also the skins are shit.

but yeah also the skins are shit. IF has really good skins, on the contrary. Part of the reason why I prefer Jcink is because I have lot of IF skins that I would like to use. Good PB skins tend to be used multiple times on other sites so it makes me feel like they're carbon copies of the other. Loses its feel. But for some reason, many site owners enjoy using solid color skins. The good IF skins I know have patterns, gradients and an overall theme. But the IF/Jcink sites I've bumped into really like gigantic category titles and glaring, large boxes of color.

Depends if you're talking premade or not, because IF uses the exact same system that jcink does and therefore can have the same skins that jcink has. Jcink and InvisionFree can both coded exactly the same, save for a few names that are different. Also, Adblock is a must-have extension. I should make it clear that I'm not trying to be a jerk. I don't know if you've tried to code in both, but the menus are pretty much identical as are the way they work. Jcink has a little bit extra with things like their shop, games, ect.

just going to pop in here, jcink and invisionfree DO have different coding systems. jcink runs both IF and J but IF only runs IF. it's not a big difference, but there IS difference between the coding schemes.
and as a personal preference, i prefer jcink over anything, but i'm not going to hate on proboards v5. i like pb v5 as a member, but i'd never have the patience to work with it as an admin/coder.

What I'm trying to say is that Jcink and IF are both run off the Invision Power Board system. While Jcink is modified, they both stem from the same system and are similar in usage. I absolutely love the modifications they've made to their system, but it still comes from the same one that IF uses.
And now when I say coding, I mean the skinning aspect. Jcink didn't offer a different default board style from 1.3 until January of this year. So if you were coding with Jcink this time last year, you were using the basic 1.3 invision stylesheet. Which is what I believe IF is still using at this time.
