What do you think of open threads in general? Make them, join them? Love them, hate them?
Depends for me. If already have threads, I usually don't join. I'm not that good on on-the-go stuffs. I think it only really worked for me for one site, Prodigious, which was one hell of an open thread site. I start them if I'm short on threads. Sometimes, I do it just to see who would join xD and I don't have to feel guilty on crashing in in case I'm secretly not welcomed.

I join them if I don't have too much going on already. Since I'm staff, though, I do tell myself if a couple days go by without a response, I will be the one to reply to it. But usually, I promote the open threads when people go "I'm bored" or whatever. "Check out Suzie's open thread, then!"
Very occasionally do I start an open thread and I only do so when I'm not swamped in threads. (Which is probably why I only do it occasionally.) I'm not a huge fan of them, I'll admit, because I need a goal to write toward. It doesn't have to be a big goal, but even something as simple as "he'll get into a fight" is all I need. I don't need to know the outcome. I just need to know that the thread will be steered toward a fight and then we write toward the outcome.
I also really really hate meet-and-greet threads. Haaaaate them. If at all possible, I would rather form connections, even loose ones like "he's a friend of a friend" so when they meet up, my character can just go "Oh yo, it's you, Bob's friend~!" That gets the whole "Hi, I'm Stu" out of the way and the plot moving.

I actually like making open threads, but as soon as I make one I seek out people who could reply to it. I'm all "HEY I LIKE YOUR CHAR LET'S THREAD...I JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE AN OPEN THREAD LOLOL". I'm subtle like a ton of bricks :'D And when I see an open thread, I want to reply to it as long as no one or only one other person has replied to it. I don't like jumping into open threads if it's progressed past four posts, because I feel like the mood of the thread is set and I don't want to disrupt it.
The one thing I desperately try not to do is make an open thread for my first post on a site, because if I can't get replies or generate interest it makes me lose interest in the site as a whole. I prefer having secured posts and set threads to reply to when I first join rather than making an open post then wait. And wait. And wait.
...Then again, I sometimes end up waiting even though I have a secured reply. But knowing someone is going to reply makes me feel better than having an open post that's like LALALA DEE DA.

I'm not a huge fan of them, I'll admit, because I need a goal to write toward. It doesn't have to be a big goal, but even something as simple as "he'll get into a fight" is all I need. Exactly. The only kind of open threads I like to make is the one... partially open, I'd say. A thread which has a purpose, and which is "open for French Navy officers", "open for French and British Navy men", "open for pirates and tavern wenches", because only those specific groups have sense to be there, but there can be as many of them as they want. Since I'm staff, though, I do tell myself if a couple days go by without a response, I will be the one to reply to it. But usually, I promote the open threads when people go "I'm bored" or whatever. "Check out Suzie's open thread, then!" This is how I am doing too. I usually reply to open threads, but I don't make many. Or, at least not that kind of open most people are talking about, but my kind. These, as described above, are rather numerous.

The way I see open threads is this;
You made it open? Expect people.
Otherwise, deal with it. Everyone's gotta occasionally deal with a RPer they don't like. :C

I don't see any problem with open threads, if I find the character interesting I'll usually join them. I make them oftentimes too, especially with characters I haven't done a lot of plotting with or if the site's threads are moving a little slower or something, idk. I don't have an issue with people making them or joining them, even if it's after a few posts (typically the third person asks). i don't know how you can /hate/ open threads. :'D
i also like to do what pasc does is make open threads and then when i plot with people i have threads for them to reply to already - no waiting required, hehe~ ♥

I love open threads. <3 Because if you're out of ideas of what/where to post, sometimes looking through what is up already can spark an idea. Or well, it has happened to me before. I also like to make them. Sometimes members find if hard to post in a certain place, especially if they're overwhelmed. XD Lol. I just find it helpful. Open threads are just plain awesome.
