i'm spending all my money on a 3ds XL + 2 games.
definitely getting layton for one of the games, and i'm a bit hesitant to get animal crossing for the other. i played the first animal crossing for the ds and didn't really like it.
do i buy animal crossing anyway? or do i get something else like smt4, smt devil summoner, fe:a or something completely different? (i already have vlr for the vita.)
i'd like two games because once you're done with layton ... you're really done with it and i don't usually go back to play it again. lol.

I think Animal Crossing really changes when you have friends to play with, and a lot of people here have it (including me). New Leaf brings a lot of new things to the table, as well. I played Wild World a lot but New Leaf really does add new things and adds a lot of quality of life changes. Another thing about Animal Crossing though is it isn't something you play all day. You just... can't really, I guess. It's something you play for a couple hours so it'd be a good idea to look into another game if you do go with Animal Crossing so you can keep yourself appeased.
I think Fire Emblem Awakening is another that is definitely worth buying. Two of my friends have it and adore it. It's suppose to be incredibly well made and one of them ordered it for me, even! The replay value should be pretty high.
Another game worth looking into is Etrian Odyssey IV. They have a demo of it on the 3DS that you can continue your save file from if you buy the full version. It really doesn't cut anything out, so playing the demo will give you a great feel for how the game is. It's one of my personal favorites. Like Fire Emblem, the replay value on Etrian Odyssey is very, very high due to how customizable it is.
I'd consider maybe buying a regular DS instead of an XL though! I have the regular and I'm perfectly fine with it. I have tiny, childish hands though so... :I That aside, the XL might affect your game resolution if that sort of thing concerns you. I'm not sure on the price difference between the two, but I think if it's significant it might be more worth while to get a regular 3DS. I'd also check the site inewcoffee, which is where I ordered mine. It was 125 and came within two days. And it was brand new! i sound like an ad sorry
If you like Final Fantasy, Theatrythm is another cute game. I don't own it but I played the demo and it seems to be really entertaining.
If you like Harvest Moon, then A New Beginning is without a doubt worth looking into. It's got really good reviews and I believe is considered one of the best of the series, now. Rune Factory 4 is also coming out soon and it's a more RPG/action-y version of Harvest Moon. It also is giving you the chance for the first time to choose a female main in the Rune Factory series (:
gosh i'm sorry this is so long.

if you're not 100% used to the normal 3ds size, you will NOT notice the XL resolution/vibrancy issues. I was amazed at how good my friend's XL looked when I first saw it, such a bigger screen! you can also play normal DS games at 1:1 and have them look great unlike the regular 3DS which I think makes them look a bit dodgy. aAKJshdkajshdasdh also I just think the XL looks nicer in general. i find the regular 3DS very awkward to hold after a while, the XL is pretty great and rounded and I love it lots, I want one (in pink if anyone is feeling generous hint hint nudge nudge)
new leaf is fun, it definitely needs online and friends to be the fullest it can be though (i have neither).
if you've never played ocarina of time, get it, the 3d is gorgeous. my friends have also very much enjoyed luigi's mansion.

i'm not sure about having friends, because i'm in asia rn and i think the vast majority of my friends are in the states (moved over here lol + you online guys o/) so playing with them is kind of limited to a weekend-only kind of thing. but i'm okay with that.
i've actually never played anything fe, and apparently it's really good. i've heard about it (and fc'd chrom before but it doesn't mean anything does it) and i'm pretty sure some people here would s2g that it's amazing.
i'll probably get a couple demos or something and figure out if i want to get anything else. you're right about the regular thing vs the XL version, though. the price is about a $12 difference, but my issue is with the color -- they ran out of red for the regular one.
i swear, though, it was a choice between animal crossing and harvest moon at some point for me. thearhythm i'm not too sure. i tend to tire of rhythm games after a bit; it's not something i can play repeatedly.
(btw it was really fun to read all of that, garden, it's not long at all when it's interesting)
re:konya -- buying my first thing out of the 3ds line, so i doubt i'll really know the difference between a 3ds and a 3ds XL hahaha. i could totally get a pink one; we have those in stock, so yeah. pretty sure i'll get the red version tho.
and yeah. the online/friends factor is definitely what's inhibiting me from picking it right off the bat. (never played anything zelda either, just ftr. idek why.)
i think i'll probably sleep on it a bit, so keep those suggestions coming o/

play zelda then if you like rpgs - it's very fun, hours upon hours of gameplay with all the sidequests, and did i mention gorgeous? it *might* feel a bit dated idk probably not if you've never played zelda before. but it is a very solid game and unlike your regular rpg from japan with stats and number and classes and shit. just a kid and a sword and monsters.

Konya I hope you get your 3DS already so I can frolick all over your town. :c
If you have a US Nintendo, I highly recommend getting SMTIV, especially if you're also grabbing FE. Not only is it an amazing game I may be biased but still you also get free $30 at the eShop to spend on if you buy both of them.
Also, both of them have high rates of replayability. SMTIV has multiple endings and a lot of bonus bosses, while FE characters can change classes, which is ideal if you want to optimize their skills. Also shipping supports.
I can't say much on Animal Crossing since New Leaf is my first AC game, but personally I think choosing between Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon depends on the amount of time you can spend on the game - if you don't have much time in your hands every day, but you would be willing to play it on a daily basis, get Animal Crossing. If you don't want to play the same game every day but you have a lot of hours in your hands, get Harvest Moon.

Novas I wish I could it's in a box on a boat somewhere still like two weeks away QQ
(also everyone is calling me konya now i think that's a sign to change my name again a ha ha ha i will no longer be responding to konya)
ALSO the deal Novas said about SMT/FE is also valid with Nintendo Europe i'm 99.9% sure. It's not in Australia, because Australia is the worst. If you're looking for things to spend that $30 eshop credit on GO RETRO oracle of ages/seasons are available go go go.

personally i'd get harvest moon only because uh, its much more easier to play for me at least than actual time based games.
mario 3DLAND is honestly a really good game if youre into it. i cloaked a good thirty someodd hour playthrough to beat it.
i'd get the remake of zelda: OoT because its a great game especially if you never played the original.
EO IV is a turned based combat game, which differs from FE to me anyway. EO IV has much more classical oldschool turned based combat game style for me. I played the demo though, its a p. good game. Though personally I'd go with FE.
uh, plus theres a few games that seem really good that are only available for download through the Nintendo Store.
PS if you can deal with terribly translated, vague, and overall strange detective games I'd pick up a copy of Lux-Pain. your friends die in this game tho if you do things wrong its older and for the DS. i've played through it every few years and it doesnt really get that old-
OH OH, and Tales of Abyss is remade for the 3DS I'd pick that one up. Tales of Games are normally solid plays with a lot of hour clocking, so its not really an easy game to beat in a day if you pace yourself. I finished it in about 3 days with 54 hours. '/sob
im just like, uh, throwing out games that i have- personally i think im giving a really bad description so i'd check out the games on a site or something.

hello, hi idk if anyone else had bought the xl, but i did and tbh it's nice having a bigger screen but the difference in resolution is noticeable. don't forget to factor in taxes, idk about you but my ds ended up being like 20 dollars extra. i can't remember what game i got, but +tax, i ended up spending nearly $400. so, tbh, i kinda wish i had gotten the smaller one because the picture is much better on the smaller screen and the xl--it's kinda awkward to carry around because it's so much bigger. like idk about anyone else, but it's awks for me so yeah.
i have harvest moon and animal leaf crossing, and while when i first bought harvest moon--btw, i HIGHLY recommend going to like a game resell shop or something because i bought it at full retail from the e-store, and the next day i went to gamestop and it was there for like 12 bucks xD so haha yeah, if there's game stores near you i suggest checking them out.
so, harvest moon vs. animal crossing -- i love hm, i play it for literally hours, but it can get pretty... repetitive, and thus it gets a little tiresome. probably because i played it like 4+ hours p much everyday after i bought it for like a week, lol. but since i bought animal crossing, it really is loads of fun. i don't have internet at home, and no where to really go that offers it, so even the offline experience is pretty great. there's always something new, or something to do so it doesn't get too repetitive if you don't let it.
friends definitely make it more fun, but i've always been a bit of a solo-er so multiplayer isn't something i put much weight on. but friends and connections make gameplay easier, gets you more cool stuff, etc. and you can go to the island and play games together, and that was super fun. harvest moon vs animal crossing, i'll never not buy harvest moon because i love it so much, but from the perspective of what's going to keep you vastly entertained i'd say go with animal crossing.
i also bought kingdom hearts dream drop, and i hate it. the motion is awkward, i can't move around smoothly and even on my 3ds screen it's like i can't see what's going on. granted, the story only just started but i just get so frustrated during battles i mash buttons and try to stay alive and it's just awful. i don't recommend this game.
fire emblem = YES YES YES, MUST HAVE! i fucking love this game so much! i haven't played any other game in the series, and it may be more fulfilling if i had, but w/e idc. this game, standalone, is perfect and i haven't played it lately because i don't want it to be over lol~
mario kart 7 is like an essential buy. it's fun, it's got great replayability, and it doesn't get too old. this was the first or maybe third game i bought, idk. so i played it pretty much all day for two days and i can still go back to it and have a ton of fun. idk about multiplayer, it's fun with close friends but the online mp is full of d-bags. it's frustrating, but really fun. defs recommend.
lemme think, i think the last game i have is the adventure time game. it's really cute, i got it because i love the series and also someone said the soundtrack was perfect so yes. if you like adventure time, you'll love this game like i do. just like the show, it's quirky and the artstyle is like modern 8-bit cuteness. also! it was pretty much the only game that looked smooth and great on my xl, aside from fire emblem also looked very smooth.
i'm currently trying to get a copy of final fantasy theatrhythm, i played the demo and it was really cool. <: but i can't pronounce the title, so i was too scared to ask for it in-stores and i can't get it online aside from ebay so |D lol, anyway hope this helped!

I got Fire Emblem Awakening with my 3DS, and it's a goddamn masterpiece. Best one in the series by far, in my opinion. Also just bought Shin Megami Tensei 4 like half an hour ago, haven't gotten a chance to start it up yet tho. Aside from those two, apparently Ocarina of Time 3D is the definitive version of the game, so that's something worth looking into for sure.

Just from my own personal experience, I really recommend Tales of the Abyss or Luigi's Mansion. Mario Kart 4's a pretty good one too, what with multiplayer with friends or just online (same with Luigi's). Personally I thought the 3D for Ocarina was really...dizzying, so I couldn't really stand it but that might just be me. As for Tales of the Abyss, I thought it was great. It is extremely time consuming, but there's definitely a lot of replay value imo just cause of all the side quests (and there are tons), extra moves and whatnot From my brother's obsessing, I'd say Paper Mario, KH Dream Drop, and Kid Icarus are worth the buy as well. As for future games, there's always gonna Super Smash Bros. 4 /sopsyched
