not fight to the death sort of thing, sorry guys. Anybody on here play pokemon showdown? I've recently gotten into the idea of pokemon competitive battling, and I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing at all. From watching a guy on youtube I've figured out the general gist of predicting moves/setups and stuff, but the thing that really takes skill over experience (teambuilding) is something that I've never quite been able to figure out. So any advice for newbies on competitive battling/what are your experiences if you play pokemon showdown? Suggestions for what to put on my teams/what setups are your favorites/anything really. Oh btw I go by the name of pixellation on showdown, and I usually do randomly generated team battles (because building teams makes me cry sob sob). we should battle sometime. |D

i play occasionally, whenever someone mentions it just so i can stomp people i know. i'm terrible i know.
if you really need help just head over to smogon and take a glance around. there's actual a team building forum and you can just copy pasta some of their teams to experiment with. smogon goes pretty in-depth with each pokemon and the various optimal ways to use them but team building is always a pain, unless you have some mon or theme you want to build around.
but yeah, pick up a random team that's highly rated and start from there. that, or you could play the random mode and try that out. i've had pretty decent success with both and managed to keep a 80/20% w/l ratio. helps to show you how and where you'll get outpredicted.
and hit me up on skype whenever you wanna battle!~~
you know who i am

I actually used smogon back when pokemon online was the hit thing, and it actually does help out a lot, yeah. Though sometimes I'm not sure which of the sets they reccomend is best for the team that I'm building and tiers aaaaa choosing the best team to check and counter in different tiers is a nightmare. Though I did hear that you shouldn't be against using legendaries as long as they get the work done. Is that true?
I do decent enough with randomly generated teams, and I figured out that purugly is a really great team member? got it three times in a row and I did manage to sweep one guy's team. I mostly get forfeits though, haha.
I'm up for a battle at any time rn, but you should contact me on skype 8( I think I know who you are but it would be super awk if I was wrong. think of the children.

yeah, team building is a pain. for the most part you center it around something and build off that idea, whether it's sandstorm team or sweeping scizor. tiers don't really matter outside of overused and the one under it. they're just rated by stand alone and frequency kind of. but, for the most part, overused are where you should be looking. unless you want to play at a lower tier which is a-ok. and legendaries are weird. some of them are divided amongst the tiers based off stats, iirc. jirachi and deoxy, the minor trios and weaker legendaries are okay. mewtwo and giritina and all that junk is in a tier of it's own.
random teams are usually made out of the weaker tiers. but some of them are really good for their tier. obtw joltik is a over powered little sob that can do everything. but yeye. let's batttttleee.
