i started out on rl rps and shifted to animanga only a few years ago. i don't find anything wrong with the idea of rl fcs - all the characters that i rp outside of proboards sites are rl fcs, but i don't really like rl rpgs.
like some people have said, there are too many girls and they always seem to be like, scene queen fcs. there are exceptions to the rule. there always are.
i also judge a site by the skin and most rl sites have skins with size 0px font and a letter spacing of like, -200000, so everything is impossible to read. i like small pretty text but there is too much of a good thing, especially when its important stuff like board descriptions.
it's usually not anything to do with members/cliques. i've tried to join a few pb sites that were so cliquey that i wasn't included at all, so i just let myself go inactive quit.
there are other factors like word count (though many sites don't have word counts) and stuff but yeah...this hasn't been a very definitive answer but still, one nonetheless 8u

using rl faceclaims (especially non-celebs) feels really invasive and weird to me, idk.

"what stops you from joining RL rps"
absolutely nothing.
Writing is writing I could care less about the pictures next to it.
Tbh a lot of the things in this thread could be said about any site regardless of claim style. It's like someone saying "there's no good music anymore", they just don't know where (or how) to look.

tbh animanga seems more invasive to me because (at least for model only sites) most of the pictures are from editorials which are at least really public and you can find the source fairly easily
but like all the icons we use are usually fanart someone like took the time to draw and poured their creativity to and now it's out here floating all around and it's usually impossible to find the source to it idk
seems more invasive

it's a moral conundrum, especially for someone involved in the art world. i keep all my sources and i try to remind myself to use official art over fanart but WHOOPS I'M PRETTY BAD AT THAT.

Even if they're actors/models, I just can't shake the thought that I'm using the face of an actual person who actually exists, especially for romantic and/or violent plots. I also always think like...what if that person by chance sees you rping as them? tbh animanga seems more invasive to me because (at least for model only sites) most of the pictures are from editorials which are at least really public and you can find the source fairly easily but like all the icons we use are usually fanart someone like took the time to draw and poured their creativity to and now it's out here floating all around and it's usually impossible to find the source to it idk seems more invasive Yeaaah, the animanga community definitely has a problem with sourcing, I personally try to keep tabs on where my icons all come from but I'm definitely guilty of just going to zerochan and leaving it at that. /horrible But for better or worse, it's easier (at least for me) to turn a blind eye to that sort of intrusiveness than the 'using a photo of a human being' intrusiveness. Why can't we just all be magical artists with the ability to quickly make hundreds of pretty pictures for our characters by ourselves ;o;

Three reasons.
1. RL sites generally ask for actors. A lot of actors have had crazy amounts of makeup, dieting, and photoshop to make themselves look pretty for cameras. It all looks horribly fake and unnatural. NO ONE LOOKS LIKE THAT.
2. On the same note of actors, can you imagine what it would be like if you were a celebrity, and you saw some person roleplaying using your face? I'd be totally creeped out by that. And even though they're celebs, I'd still like to regard them as humans and not treat them like showdogs.
3. A lot of celebrities look like hipsters these days. I've got a severe intolerance for hipsters.

in response to the people saying "well what if the celebrity saw you using their face, they would think that's weird," i say that artists of the art we all use can find this stuff just as easily and be just as creeped out/offended and we all know some/most (if not all?? idk) are.
i mean i'm as guilty of this as many other people but i just wanted to bring that up. also, photoshoots/editorials are also artwork, lets not forget that either

Wait. I know the way to resolve this debate. Let's go back to the old style of roleplay where we wrote out our appearances in paragraphs and had no images whatsoever.

NO ONE LOOKS LIKE THAT. Nobody looks like anime characters do, either. And if you search around, there are plenty of more 'natural' looking, real people you can use. A lot of rl rpers do tend to romanticize and make their characters perfect looking, but I like that there's more variety of faces in rl than in anime. If animanga characters aren't pretty, they're usually gag characters who are completely hideous and not meant to be serious. Real life fcs have more in-betweens, you just have to search around.

I don;t like anime (except Sandy Bell, Heidi, Cuore in my young years, or Disney movies) and they don't match my stories. The RL face claims are like actors we are casting in a RL movie/ story. This is what we are writing, and this is what I am doing.
As long as I am using public personalities' faces, it is OK. I am not playing as them, I am only casting them in certain roles. Exactly what they usually do.

i've just never found a real life site that really held my interest in terms of plot or genre besides harry potter ones. i'm not really interested in the slice of life or small town/boarding school scene that dominated real life sites last time i looked through them. animanga tends to have more of the fantastical/fandom sites that i'm drawn to.
conversely, i would very much prefer to use a real life fc to animanga if i had a choice. i feel drastically limited by animanga fcs when it comes to representing my characters, especially in terms of race.
