I'm not sure I've ever played my character out of character or anything, but I have felt like I wasn't exactly writing with their voice in mind!
For example, a friend of mine has a character that's a really cold, distant, logical kind of chick. Very serious, and has next to no tolerance for anyone really, especially other characters she thinks are stupid. And you can see it not just in the way she speaks and interacts with those other characters, but in the way this friend of mine decides to write when she's playing her.
I think what I'm trying to say is that while my writing might be technically sound and all that, my syntax and style doesn't always have my character's essence in it.
Does that make any sense at all? Cause it's kinda hard to explain.
I'm sorry, I'm just gonna go away forever a little while.

I do and I don't. I sometimes worry more that my style doesn't always show the character well. I can't really explain it well - which is really... irritating

I think what I'm trying to say is that while my writing might be technically sound and all that, my syntax and style doesn't always have my character's essence in it. Yeah, I totally get this. I was thinking of a certain character which prompted me this thread. And I think it's what makes the writing method of roleplaying different from the usual. You want the tone of your writing to illustrate what kind of character you have. Because of this, I do have to change my "writing style" to reflect that. I don't do this often; I only do it to certain characters. An instance would be for my characters who project an enigmatic aura. My approach to them is to limit narration of their thoughts in concise dialogues and make distinct, descriptive gestures. I also prioritize narrating action and dialogues first in respond to the post before adding thoughts in relation to this to have a confusion or curios effect on the reader. I do it to my lovely idiots too. Instead of stating plainly in words how oblivious my char is to the situation, I write the respond as if nothing ever happened. These techniques are nothing new. Most rpers probably do them unconsciously, but if they're not explicitly aware, the interpretation becomes open to misunderstanding. I've had instances where I feel like the other person just thought I was being too lazy, and instead of evaluating the impression I was trying to convey, the person proceeded as if nothing happened. We become out-of-sync so I just sigh and slam my head on the keyboard. It's always easier to just write your character plainly as it is but ah, life.

sometimes i get my character into situations where idk how they'd react, either because their new or something, and i just bullshit my way through...but idk, thats all part of the process.
also if i'm tired i find that its waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay harder to stay in character because i'm like "i have to get this post out and then i can go to bed"
the oocness goes on more in chatplays with my good friend tho lol

i don't think i've ever regretted playing my character "wrong", i regret painting my character out to be somebody i don't know how to write.
i do it a lot, especially in plots because i get an idea into my head and i think "yeah that sounds like a great idea!" because it fits with who my character is, but then when i get around to writing it, i blank out and go "omg, how am i going to make this happen while staying true to their application."
so maybe it's more, i regret thinking my character is someone i think i can write when they're not? idk.

this thread has all of my feels.
i struggle with this, because i like trying to make dynamic characters who are out of the ordinary and have eccentric personalities and whatnot - but like, i'm not an eccentric or out of the ordinary person, so it's very difficult trying to rp these things. Like, I want to play the lady-killer boy always, but find it so hard, since I am neither a boy or a lady killer (or a boy killer for that matter /creys). i always approach threads with my mindset, rather than the character's mindset. for example: i can't play an emotionless, heartless character because i'm not and physically cannot respond to somebody's concern in a mean way. it's so hard, because even though everybody is just a character, it hurts my frail heart to hurt their feels. ;A;
and sometimes, i go on vacation and come back and forget how to get into the mindset of how my character is. #thestruggleisreal

Haha i feel like everyone has all those troubles in rp at one point. Sometimes i'll completely forget the type of person my character is, and end up rping my character with the way i myself would respond rather than the character.
