Please note that this is not a bash on anyone's skins, nor is it a bash on anyone. Anyone who knows me knows that I try to keep something resembling neutrality and wisdom... TRY being the key word.
Anywho, I was thinking about the concept of 3D hover links. At least, that's what I call them. I mean the links where when you hover over them, there's blue text-shadow on one side and red text-shadow on the other?
My question is, where did this trend come from, and why has it gained popularity? I find that it hurts my eyes when sites have those kinds of effects, but I'd like to understand the mentality behind that style choice before I write it off as something I completely dislike.
Am I supposed to be wearing 3D glasses? ._.

Man, anything with those 3d effects and colors gives me a migraine and makes me super nauseous if I look at it too long. D: So I'm definitely not a fan. To answer the question, I'm not actually sure where it started. I imagine it started like most trends, though. One person did it and then multiple other people saw it and thought "That's sooo cool, I have to do it, too!" Thus, a new trend was born. But yeah, I'm not a big fan either.

i like them as an appetizer but not as the whole meal.
most of my friends don't even like them all that much. most of the time, the 3D effect is overdone and as you said, hurts the eyes. if you want to use them for hovers or maybe like a single image or an accent, i think it's cool, but they should not be used all over the forum.
