Hopping by to say that I'd totally join.
What's your ideas for the actual mermaid civilizations and how they work? Is the deep sea more primitive and the sunsoaked a lot more modernised? EDIT: lol, nevermind. I read the race descriptions. XD
I would like it to be sandbox, but every month, the staff could throw in mini-plot to keep the side going. I.e. a hurricane attacks the coast etc.
Perhaps we could purchase perks and extra abilities such as a hypnotic siren singing voice, water manipulation when you're on land etc? Would human/mermaid hybrids be permitted?
Lame title ideas: Beneath the Surface (BoS) Release the Kraken! (RtK) Something fishy (SF)
Would it be difficult to find FCs for the deepsea merfolk if their human parts and corpse-ish and have tattoos? Or am I just clueless when it comes to FCs?

Yay, a member! <3 Welcome Wolf! I was thinking about siren’s being one of the three fae option already, but maybe things like powers could be buyable? What does everyone else think? I don’t usually care about things you can buy in shops/special powers, so I dunno if I should have a say in it. I personally wouldn’t like hybrids to be a thing, unless they’re majorly messed up and genetically frail and hideous. I think there are enough races to play already though. Those are cute titles! I like Something Fishy and I still like H2-OHNO as wellAs for deepsea fc, I know there are a few options that fit well (homestuck, albino characters, D.Gray. Man’s villians, people like banda and Marceline, black and white options, and even normal characters with art that’s halloween a fied), but if people have a problem with that limitation, we could say they have a glamour ability that lasts temporarily (used in the past to look closer to sunsoaked so they could get closer and nab them in raids?) and people can use that for fcs while writing descriptions of their actual look in the profile. Tattoos can be less in some tribes, or just written about too. We’re already going to need to write something different than the fcs would have to describe their fishy traits. C:

hmm, powers could be cool at some point. the shop could maybe be an ic deal, like the sea witch / potion stuff we were talking about? I dunno. doesn't seem like a huge priority though, could probably be added later at some point.
and yeah, hybrids are a lot of work. and stuff. owo
I do like Something Fishy and H2OHNO :3
yeah, I don't think the fcs would be too much of a big deal, since you'd have to describe fins / tails / whatever separately anyway? there are plenty of pale skinned characters out there that you could probably use, and emphasize in their description that they're a bit more grey than normal.
also did we decide on old times vs modern? owo

I'm pretty sure modern, since it was the more popular one. c: What do you think of them being a protected species/people by the country's government like I mentioned as a possibility? Would that be okay, or would you prefer another route?

yeah i don't really care either way, i'd be fine with people not needing to buy powers and just apping them, since staff could just deal w it case by case and yeah, hybrids can get complicated and weird. either say that humans & merms can't reproduce (like they lay eggs or something fishy bc i don't see how they'd be able to reproduce like humans underwater w tails haha) or that if they can, the offspring is either human or mermaid, no in betweens. and honestly i love using weird fcs so personally i'm excited to have a place to use non-human looking ones haha. but either way yeah, there would need to be a description on apps. H2OHNO is my personal fave, like i said, but if u wanted to keep it simple, "the aquarium"? and that works - or maybe it's a recently discovered island? or just say the mermaids are in certain part of the ocean that's difficult to reach, like some bermuda triangle shit so that people aren't easily going to be going out and messing with them. like i'm fine with suspending disbelief a bit for this haha.

Trying to think of store items aside from a second fae character slot if we don’t go with buying powers (I’m also fine with minor ones being normally appable, just no, like goldly ones).
Eggs are the cutest option in my opinion. >u> Eggs that grow outside the womb (cause ow otherwise) and hatch cute widdle mermaids, daaww. Sidenote, would seashorse males carry the eggs in egg pouches like they do in the wild? xD
I liked weird fcs too! >w< I tend to use them whenever I can (like Jasdevi up there).
That song is so true! And I think H2OHNO wins then? I’ll start writing up more site stuff tonight, just trying to figure out what all needs to be done.
Either of those options also work well! Now I dunno which we should go with. Onz I wish I could set up a poll for things like this. xD

yeah just maybe add that to the race descriptions, like what powers they would commonly have are eggs like fertilized outside too omg. either way that makes human/mermaid reproduction impossible. i started on the skin btw, tiny preview of the hovery header

maybe if you wanted a site plot, you could say shallow water mermaids can have legs and go on land (it could be an ability, with stipulations), and maybe even a lot of them are doing it more often to escape the deep sea mermaids because they're getting attacked more frequently? deep sea mermaids could even be capable of it too, though since they're not around shores, it's really rare for them to use it. lolololol you could always make it like sims the mermaids can walk on land but their legs get all scaley and funny-looking lolololololololol .. .. omg jk. tbh i didn't really creep all of the posts in this thread so forgive my input if you've already decided on things or whatever aha i think that the shallow/deep sea would be like two different pods/clans/kingdoms of merfolk? the deep, in my brain, would have different physical attributes compared to deep sea (maybe camofloush like things), maybe the shallow could feel more "tropical reef" like -- with insane hair colors, skin colors, and wacky features, whereas the deep sea could be a little more reserved-looking, to blend in with their surroundings: dark hair -- shades of blue, green, purple, and black, etc. just a suggestion ;D there's even room for an insane amount of lore between the groups too, as well as typical demeanor and moral beliefs between the two groups. i'm definitely all for some rivalry between the deep and shallow. in bios, you can also include personal opinions about land and humans for mermaids, and the opposite for humans. have the characters write their personal, first-person pov about the different aspects. (we had this on submerged 8 million years ago and i am giving you permission to use it aha) you could always make going on land "buyable" like a magical sea item or something, or they have to request it from the mermaid king / king of the sea / whatever, which would be a short and sweet rp thread with the staff-played ncp? just like "my name is ___ and i would like to go on land to see things" "your wish is granted, youngling you have (amount of time) to accomplish your quest" or w/e, the time would be irrelevant to rl time ofc. i'm drawing inspiration from this from the little mermaid, of course, but yeh...it's a flawed idea but idk, TOSSING THINGS OUT CAUSE I WANNA SEE THIS BE A SUCCESS OK i LIKE THIS IDEA. if you made going on land buyable, it should be kinda cheap but also with requirements. like, you have to have attempted to plot and have posted icly or been active for xx days, cause you don't want kids frolicking around the island and not rping elsewhere? idk man. also, in my brain, going on land should have consequences for mermaids. more deep sea than shallow, but like...maybe the longer they need to stay on land, the worse their powers get (if they have powers)? or there is a threat to become human forever? ----- you could always run it kinda like an animal rp and make extra fin accessories (shark, etc) and appearance things buyable, also charms and whatnot too -- like danger-warding charms, etc, maybe even extra powers (fish summoning, shark summoning, water manipulation, etc?) i would love to see an admin ncp invading threads with sharks, jellyfish (nemo anyone, anyone?), and just causing a ruckus for the mermaids and humans, cause as shark week said - the ocean is a wild place. ^-^ on the other hand, i love the idea of there being different races, esp. for the shallow and deepsea merpeople. like sharks, just normal fish, and etc. for deepsea -- then like the more colorful breeds for shallow? -- also would totally love to help BUT my hands are insanely, over the top, full. ;A; sry boo. that also ended up being a lot more input than i had originally planned whoops.

beekeeper : We can just be very vague about whether it’s like fish or more like dolphins. xD Seems the safe way to go! That skins looks great! Can’t wait to see more of it. >w< SEADRA : I think we’ve settled on the deep sea/shallows mermaids being very different in both appearance and culture. C: I wrote race descriptions up under spoiler tags on page one, you should check ‘em out and see what you think. <3 I think that having personal views for the other races in the profile would be fun! All of your other ideas are great too, but they’d need a lot of staff to run them to make them succeed. >< Since we’re having trouble having anyone available to even run it, I don’t think we could do most of it, for all that they’re awesome ideas! Mmkay, I tried to write descriptions up for the other two playable races. They’re luckily much shorter than the mermaid ones, so tell me what you guys think? The Fae A collective term for humanoid tricksters and creatures from traditional myths, there are many types in their homeland across the world from TOWNNAME. However, in TOWNNAME, there are only very few: most likely recent tourists and sea-based treasure hunters. Because they are so very rare here, we’d like to keep the count low. Only one fae character per person as of now. Later, you may be able to purchase a second fae character slot. Below are the currently accepted playable fae. Fae are known to exist now, but that revelation is recent.
Selkies: Doubtlessly a cousin species to the merfolk, these men and women are a sort of shape shifter. Normally seals, they can remove their seal skins to transform into humans. However, they must never loose possession of their discarded seal hides, as they are not able to change back without putting them on. Not really known for anything malicious, they tend to be more of victims in their tales, with people stealing their seal skin and forcing them to stay on land forever.
Kelpies: Another shapeshifter, yet this time one known to be more malicious or at least nasty, the kelpie is a creature that looks just like a horse yet can transform into a human (often with hooves). Despite this, it is a water creature first and foremost, sticking to marshes and ponds usually. In myths, it tricks people into the water by either pretending to be a drowning horse, or by tricking people to touch it whereupon they get stuck. Most tend to say they consume their victims, yet the reality is most just like to terrify people with near drowning.Rude.
Sirens: Often when the name Siren is mentioned people envision mermaids, as their songs at sea are all most will know of them. However, sirens are actually an avian species. With wings and feathers strewn throughout their humanoid forms, they are as varied with bird type traits as the merfolk are with fish ones. Of all the fae, they have the hardest time passing as humans, as vanquishing their wings and then casting a glamour that can be fooled by touch is the best they can do. However, they make up for it by having a singing voice that compels others to follow it. In the past the species used to lure ships to their lonely outcrop, leading to crashes. However, all they wanted was a way to escape their island. Now that they’re out in the normal world, they tend to sing only as pair-bonding with their own kind.
General Weaknesses: All fae are weak to touching pure iron.
Humans No need to really describe humans, right? The island was free of humans until about a hundred years ago, where a few managed to navigate the dangerous waters and set up the small town. The original population was mixed ethnicity wise, though most were Asian pacific islanders. With the recent discovery that the area was an old pirate cove, treasure hunters from across the world have been arriving for the past two years to scour the waters: despite a ban on disturbing the local merfolk populations. Alongside those, many business and craftsmen have come to make money off the hunters, and settle into TOWNNAME: at least temporarily.
Strength: Tend to be stronger physically than other races, have technology, and are varied.
Weaknesses: Kinda crap in water, obviously. EDIT: Ooooh, but maybe we can sell a potion that lets mermaid's bypass turning back when they touch water, for a limited time? The problem being there is a risk of being stuck as a human forever (Like you said, seadra) if used often?

mrrrr I love everything that everyone's brought up. don't have many new ideas personally but like yes to everything ahh ouo
also I can definitely help run shops, little rp threads like Seadra mentioned, etc. I can do a lot of the staffy grunt work if y'all want, I don't mind, I just can't be head admin cause I'm the most emptyheaded person ever ewe"
and that section of app with the first person look at races sounds absolutely amazing, +1000 on that

The sunsoaked sound like they could live in a kingdom similar to Atlantis. Do they have their own type of wacky underwater technology (streetlamps, mermaid-version of buses/trains, functioning mermaid-style computers) or is it more medieval-esque?

I like to think it varies depending how far they are from their main city. Like, far out ones have more medievel or natural caves/corals/ect to call home, whereas the ones in the city are more modern with luminous algea streetlamps and beautiful buildings. Whale buses? I dunno about the internet though, since that'd be very complex a thing for a small nation isolated and underwater. Messenger fish (cute little flying fish?) seem more fun to me than, Mer-Ims, but what does everyone else think? : )

Mmkay, lets see what's left to do. <3
Plot: Written up already, if acceptable. Rules: Pretty easy to write up. Should it have any special ones? Races: Written up already, if acceptable. Setting/Important Information: I can write this up, and get opinions on what to change? What are good for the town and sea names? Any ideas? Profiles: I can’t code. Onz Laika mentioned doing templates to match the skin, yet if she doesn’t want to make a profile template, we can use premade? Special Groups?: Laika mentioned these, and they seem like a good idea. Anyone have any ideas for them? Areas: So we need some sea areas and some land areas. Does anyone have any ideas for these as well? C: My tiny contributes as of now: Abandoned ship wreck sight (sea), coral reef (sea), kelp forest (sea), tavern inn (town), seafood restaurant (land), Beach(both), bazaar(sea or land?), Starbucks or McDonalds (they go everywhere xD), Lighthouse (land), hot springs (land), volcanic vents(deep sea), whale graveyard(deep sea).
I’m trying to think of activities that mermaids could do under water. It’d be bad if people all had to thread on land for things to do. >n<

ah sorry i been lurking the posts without very much to contribute tbh everything sounds good!!
probably need to decide on a more exact location first like, what continent/ocean, before naming it and deciding what kind of shore it's on. like... since it wasn't a tourist spot before the treasure i don't imagine it has really nice sandy beaches, more something rocky and kind of dangerous? city is going to be made up, i assume?
but yeah, deepsea can have a couple major tribes, maybe sunsoaked have some kind of border patrol against the deepsea attacks, maybe like a group of mermaid trendsters who are all about goin on land despite the older mermaids being like 'nooo it dangerous', etc. i will think on these some more, but i just figure they'd be a good addition to give people some ideas.
and premades are ratchet, i got you on temps haha. just lemme know what categories you want. from what i understand, the basics would be included - name age gender etc., personality (i prefer listed traits but idk what you guys had in mind), appearance (mostly for mermaids & fey), and then history/etc?
