OKAY SO. This is based on an idea that a friend and I played around with a long time ago, and in summary it’s basically "dragonriders with illegal probending-esque tournaments." I've seen a few dragon-based site ideas already, but this one doesn't really focus much on war or politics (though it could in the future). Instead, it focuses on the aforementioned tournaments and just... life as a dragonrider in general? Here’s some information, if you want it.
SETTING: From long ago, dragons and their riders have been isolated from the rest of the world. The year is 2014, but dragonriders live in a very different sort of era from our modern society. In the Atlantic ocean, there lies a massive continental island, masked from the outside world by ancient draconic forces. (Have you ever wondered what the Bermuda Triangle holds?) This island is called Essodal, meaning encampment in the ancient dragon tongue, and is home to the four species of dragon. In the north are the bubbling, eternally erupting volcanoes — home to Rokhtar. In the south are glaciers and icecaps, home to Cirthe. In the east are the rugged, old and stout mountains and desert lands, home to Gwaedor and, similarly, in the west are the lush fertile lands with guzzling brooks and untameable flora — home to Enorre. Though riders may choose to live in the region of their dragons, most of Essodal's inhabitants live within the central metropolis, simply called Essol.
MINI BACKSTORY: According to ancient legend, the first ever rider and the first ever dragon were born with a telepathic link connecting them, almost like a thread. Descendants of the rider and descendants of the dragons do not know for sure whether said legend is fact or myth, but what is known for certain is that one dragon is only ever meant for one specific rider, and vice versa. Riders are paired with their dragons before the former reaches the age of twelve, and will then bond with each other over time.
* MAIN PLOT: A growing trend amongst the dragonriders are the Crusades, an illegal gaming tournament run by the Anedhal (a mysterious faction of dragonriders with arcane powers). Each tournament takes place within different areas of Essodal, depending on the Anedhal's favour. Games can either be played solo or in teams of three, depending on the nature of the round. Dragons and their riders battle it out and, based on the prowess of the team and a vote cast by the spectating audience, the team that wins the round will go in again for the next game until one rises victorious at the end. The winning team is awarded the weekly money ballot. Participation fee is three golden pearls.
DRAGONS: The four dragon species are listed below. Children are often taken across the four regions in the years before their twelfth birthday so that they may find their dragon; it is seen as good luck to find said dragon when the child is of as young an age as possible. If they are above the age of twelve and have yet to find their dragon (though this is quite rare, and may perhaps mean that they are not destined for a dragon at all) they are still expected to keep looking. If a dragon, for any reason, loses its life, the rider will not find another.
Gwaedor: dragons of strength
Enorre: dragons of speed
Rokhtar: dragons of fire
Cirthe: dragons of ice
NAMING SYSTEM: Names work as follows: first name, son/daughter of father’s/mother’s name. Gwaedor riders and Rokhtar riders are often seen as the “heads” of families — thus, if your father is a Gwaedor or Rokhtar rider, you will follow his name but, if your mother is, then you will follow hers. If both of your parents are either Gwaedor or Rokhtar, you will use your father’s name, and if neither are — as in, both are either Enorre or Cirthe, or have no dragons at all — you are to use your mother’s.
OTHER: The inhabitants of Essodal are very nature oriented, wield “medieval” weapons and live in an altogether sort of backwards era. The barter and trade system is often used, but pearls are also a common form of currency (golden, black then white in order of value). A human from outside Essodal can only enter the mystical land with a specific token — a scale from a dragon's hide.
This is basically the base of the information, though there's also some other stuff: on civilians from the outside world eventually getting in, on the lore, on social status and governments, and a whole lot more. It's kind of unnecessarily detailed, but I'd also be interested in further building the world with other people. I just wanted to see if anyone would be into something like this? (And if you'd be into staffing, as well, that'd be awesome.) I'd love opinions or comments, even if it's just "Yes, I'd join this" or "No, this is lame." So, uh, thoughts? <3
