So I'm not sure if it's just something I'm doing wrong with presentation, or if the idea just isn't interesting enough, but I've run this one site over a year now, and we have not gained a single active member since May- and that member is probably gone, so most of our members are the same group of 6 (3 of which rarely get on anyway) that we gained in our first two months of activity. Which we ran fine with, we come up with plots and RP within our selves but it does get stale without fresh blood, or other people to RP with.
My question is what do you want to see in a site- what immediately turns you away? We've had only a handful of guests and none of them have stayed long, and I've revamped our stuff several times in hopes of making it more desirable, but I'm at a loss of what else to do, and the site will die if we don't get some more activity.

90% of the time, it's the premise that draws me to the site and gets me to check it out. first thing i check out after that is how active the site is through recent posts/threads. an active cbox helps too, but an active forum is more important to me. i don't really talk in cboxes that much, but cbox atmosphere is something i check out too because i feel like it gives a good sense of how the community interacts. if it's not something i personally feel like i can mesh with, i tend to x out more often than not. if i'm cool with it though, the rest is really just scouting to see if the site works with how i want to write, and if i can think of a character that'd work well there. + lots of lurking after to really make sure i wanna be there. immediate turn-offs to me would be if the board isn't as active as i want, though i realize a dying board would want new members for more activity; and if the rules don't work with how i wanna write (eg: min word count too high or tense restrictions). admittedly, long apps are also a turn-off to me, but it's something i'm willing to work with if i like the place enough.
i can't really speak for your site since i don't know it (is it the one in your sig?), but if it's a small group that's been together for a long time, maybe guests are worried they won't able to join the group and the current plots easily? there's also ads and affs to keep in mind too
